- wolfe10ExplorerShould have the Cummins C engine-- an excellent one.
One of the qualifiers for a coach of this age is whether you do your own work or hire everything out.
If you do your own work (both interest and ability) this could be a winner.
If you need to find a tech every time something doesn't work, pass. - nohurryExplorerThat is a very low priced RV. If that's your budget, and you don't have extra disposable come to fix/maintain it, I would pass. If you're shopping that price range to allow yourself the extra $ to repair as needed, and feel you can do it, then why not? But you will most assuredly be spending more on it. Also, think about what you're going to do with it when the repair costs exceed it's value. It will be hard to get rid of.
- bogeygolferExplorerAsking $15, you could probably buy for $10-$12 maybe? And, at that price, what else can you buy? Not much. Heck, a "good" used travel trailer will cost more. Without seeing it myself, I'd say it's worth investigating further - mainly because of the one-owner and maintenance. But just be ready - you're gonna have to put some cash into that baby to keep it going. A/C, fridge, air springs, brakes, tires ($4,000), batteries, etc, etc...the list can get long. I don't personally know about those coaches, but have always read that they are good quality.
Sounds like you're in a similar situation to what we were - wanted to try out the motorhome lifestyle, wanted quality, didn't have a lot of money to spend (nor did we want to at this point), opted for older quality unit. Has been quite a learning experience, and am happy with our decisions. Just takes $$$, time, and help from some knowledgeable friends. - rgatijnet1Explorer IIIThe engine internals may go for many many more miles but things like belts, lift pumps, injectors, cooling fans, radiator, transmission, tires, batteries, etc, may be on their last legs. Chances are that the house systems are well worn as well. The furniture and carpeting may be well worn and the mattress will need to be replaced.
All things considered this looks like it has the potential of costing you several thousand in the days and years to come. One breakdown during trip can prove to be disastrous on a rig that can cost thousands to have anything repaired.
I would keep looking. - EffyExplorer IINo. Too many potential failures at that point. Drivetrain aside, the house has been rumbling down the road for 20 years and 200k miles too. Things have got to be starting to fall apart. I think you'd be buying problems and with hundreds of comparable options out there as a buyer, I would look elsewhere.
- HotwheelbillExplorer300 Cummins and with it being a 1996, it does not have a computer controlled fuel system. Manual fuel pump to feed the manual injection pump. HP can be turned up in about 30mins for free.
I am a long way from retirement and plan to use the Coach for "Camping" about 3 times a year 4-6 days each. Also used as a travel vehicle for long trips up north and back. Third use is guest house for family visits.
I see my first Diesel Pusher as a step for me for moving up later. - IvylogExplorer IIISorry Brett in advance.
OP, if it's a Cat 3126 putting out more than 250 hp it's nearing the end of it's life. You might get another 100K out of it but I've seen way too many trucks with that combo that do not make it to 300K without an expensive overhaul.
If it's a Cummins 8.3 then you have another 2-300K+ before worrying about needing a overhaul which is less expensive to do than on the 3126.
If it has the Cat and with the wear and tear of 200K miles and if you are not handy at repairing and changing things... RUN
OP, glad it has a Cummins 8.3.
Not to pile on the Cat 3126 here is a add that I just found in searching for a FL 70. "2000 Freightliner FL60 Crew Cab, Caterpillar Diesel 350,000 miles (motor was rebuilt at 230,000 miles)." - midnightsadieExplorer IIgive me a break! its older. the engine might go 500k ,BUT ALL the other stuff is worn out.that make the engine run. you guys know, all that little $500. dollar parts that make it PURR.
- GlennLeverExplorerIf it has been maintained the mileage is not a problem. The ancillary equipment (A/C units, refrigerator, water heater TVs etc might be.
The American Coaches are well built, I have one, - wallynmExplorerIf the DW liked it and the price was right - then yes.
