Ok - we'll see of I can put this into words...We are headed into our first season of camping with our newest family member - a chocolate lab who is, currently, 10m old. We don't like the fit and function of using his crate in the rear of the Suburban (would have to sit sideways, turn and hang over the back bumper to get him out, to...). We'd like to use a pet barrier that would let him stay in the very back without a crate, but would like to confine the space a little bit by having a barrier come off the main barrier in order to split the rear section into two parts (allowing for his comfort in a slightly more confined area, and allowing the other section to carry some basic items such as emergency gear, hitch gear, etc...). Has anyone ever seen something like this, or created one on your own? I welcome any input that might be out there.

If I was going to make a center divider; I'd probably use something called Hog Panel: it's fence that's stiff enough to be free-standing and you could bend the wires easily enough to loop around a conventional dog barrier? Granted, it would seem silly to buy and entire 16' piece of the panel for one small section; but it's cheap. Less than $20.The other thought would be use one wall of a dog crate (the kind that uses the long pins to hold it together) and zip-tie it to a barrier?

You can buy individual xpen panels that may suit your needs. Also might look into an old wooden crib. Taken apart and reconfigured for dog use, the make excellent low cost barriers.Carolyn

Is it possible to use one of those 'Spider Bungees' to separate the gear from the dog? It's a rectangular, square-weave thing made of bungee material. It has Bungee type hooks on it. If you could use that, and find places to secure the hooks, it may be a cheaper, easier way to go.

We typically purchase several panels at a time using our stock trailer. Before we had the stock trailer I loaded several on top of our van (roof rack with long boards running front to back to support the panels). We'll need a few more this summer along with several gates.

My son puts one end in the back of a pickup truck bed, then pushes the other end until it's like half a hoop, and drops it in the back of the bed. Rides just fine like that with a rope thrown over the top...LOL!! Springs back to flat when you take it out.

I use a couple of short (maybe 5') sections to keep dogs visiting my house from jumping into the lake and running around the end of the fences; I just anchor the short pieces with T-posts along the shore. A determined dog will have to swim around the end to escape. Mine have been taught to stay in our yard - it's visitors I keep in or out, depending on whose house they're visiting

The solution you are describing would be very unsafe in the event of even a fairly minor collision. A crate with a side door is a much better alternative and won't cost any more than the better quality wire panels. Also be sure that you are getting the correct size crate. It just needs to be big enough for the dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down. If it is much larger than that, besides taking up cargo space, it is not offering the dog the level of protection in a crash that it was meant to.

We use the sheep&goat panels (4"x4" @ $58) to make hay/grain feeders and we use the combo panels (6"x6" gradated @ $40) for fencing in animal crowding areas (small pens, barnyard, small training area, etc). My guess is the $21 panels have thinner wires. The panels in our training area have dents from sheep running into the panels trying to escape enthusiastic green dogs.

You do need a way to get them home or you have to cut them up at the store.

We love the tomato cages we made from left over sections; they don't break at the welds when you are putting them/taking them out of the ground, they are heavy duty enough to support the very large (paste) tomato plants we grow, and they don't start rusting after one growing season.

Oh - OOPSY! Hog panels cost $20.79 (it's good to live in Michigan, Mark...LOL!) I assumed the OP would cut and file the ends so the dog wouldn't get hurt? Because yes, they're sharp, fresh from the bolt cutter! We used them as upper horse stall partitions, due to their durability and rigidity.

Thanks everyone - you're feedback has inspired a solution. I'm going to use a standard metal barrier and then create a pvc barrier that I will zip-tie to the main barrier to divide the space. This will allow me to place arms at the free end of the barrier that will reach to the side of the car and hold it in place. Should be able to make it relatively inexpensively, and I think it will serve our purpose well. Thanks for the input!
