Camera shopping: shutter lag?

I have a Nikon D60 DLSR, but assume you are talking about point and shoot smaller camera..

We have owned about 6-7 different point and shoot cameras over the years... And I can completely understand the shutter lag you mention.. The point and shoot camera I have been most happy with the results from has actually been my iPhone...

Shutter lag is one of the specifications given by dpreview. They have reviews on many cameras.

My son repeats this over and over - zero shutter lag...

That is definitely not my experience. Maybe it is my settings but I have plenty of shots of empty trail trying to take pics at my sons bike races. Good thing my wife takes pics with her Nikon as I stink as a photography person.

I'm totally ignorant in this department so please bear with me...

I'm not wedded to the point and shoot concept- or even, necessarily, price. Just looking for a camera that will take a pic when I tell it to! And we don't own/intend to own cell phones of any kind, so that's out.

You mention the Nikon you own- does it lack the lag and if so is that model/type specific?

just food for fodder... sometime the point and shoot type cameras have autofocus usually turned on. What the lag comes from is the camera has to focus before firing off. That takes a couple milli seconds. It seems forever. To prevent the lag try pressing the capture button half way down but not enough to fire the camera off. You will see the camera autofocus. When your satisfied then press it the remainder of the way down and that should cure the lag. I hope that helps somewhat with people having a lag problem.

Any basic SLR camera will have essentially no shutter lag. I like the Cannon Rebels but there are several good choices.

My Nikon doesn't lag, but it is a digital SLR... So not exactly a point and shoot camera..

Not knowing how much you know about cameras, an SLR is a fairly large camera that you carry in a bag or bags depending on how many lens you have...

what I would consider a point and shoot is something that fits in a purse or pocket.. We have owned point and shoots from Olympus, Nikon, Fujifilm, Canon and Kodak if I am recalling all of them.

Probably liked the Canon's best(had a few), but don't have a point and shoot now, just carry my phone. I was in Sweden a few weeks ago for business and got to see some of the sights... Phone was the only camera I had on me. Here are some shots I managed to grab with it..

I was a die hard Olympus fan but when the second one I bought locked up I switched. Took me 2 months to find just the right one.

I'm not a camera geek nor did I want to spend a lot of money. I just want the damn thing to take a good picture when I want it to.

With the Olympus camera I had a ton of missed shots, blurred shots etc. This Sony Cyber-shot not only takes care of my shaking hands after a couple cups of coffee, it's been 2 years now and I have NOT had one blurred shot. Every picture is what I wanted to capture and all of them are in total in focus. I particularly like the scan mode. You can start at one end of the CG and shot across the whole place and it puts it all together, and the viewing screen on this model is BIG.

Best camera I have bought.
