Switching Service Between Two Different Phones.

I've asked this question on a Verizon forum, but haven't yet received an answer, so I thought I'd post it here, too.

I have a Jitterbug flip phone which I'm not using (mfd by Alcatel). I like it better than my current flip phone (LG, Verizon). The Alcatel phone still shows my current phone no. in Phone Info. I'm wondering if it's possible to have Verizon switch my service between these two phones, even though the manufacturers and carriers are different. Is it a matter of just changing a sim card, or is it not that simple?

The employee probably had no idea what he/she was talking about. There is some interesting reading from Verizon HERE It is dated August 26, 2009. You could try calling the number in the story.

Perhaps the easiest thing is to activate the Jitterbug with Great Call and ask them to port your Verizon number to the Jitterbug phone, you will still be on the Verizon network, just a different reseller.

There are many other options but they require some technical knowledge of the cell phone business.

If the two phones use the same SIM. (Same size) odds are you can swap them. You can do this or Verizon may do it.

    Second thought.

As I recall the Jitterbug phone is somewhat limited in what it can do... You may be able to get a lower cost plan if using it. That one I can not answer however, only ask.. I do not support Verizon due to past experience with what THEY call customer Service and I call Cuss Some More Non Service.

Verizon customer service has been OK with me. Maybe they don't like you! :B

  • Well, I stopped by the local Verizon store and was told it couldn't be done;something about frequency mismatch. Doesn't matter, I'm still pretty satisfied with my LG/Verizon flip phone.

I wonder if the Jitterbug is worth anything to somebody since it's in virtually new condition? I believe it had cost around $80, IIRC.
  • Switching phone number between phones is called porting. think it is allowed between any phones. Even land lines.
  • Yes, the Jitterbug phone says "Great Call" on the screen when started up. The phone is in like new condition, perhaps less than 2 yrs old. Maybe I'll visit a Verizon store, as suggested, and see what they can do. I like the large screen and buttons on the Jitterbug phone. I know Verizon will try to sell me on a smart phone, but I don't need or want that. ;)
  • what 'carrier' is the jitterbug on ?
Great Call ? maybe , also Maybe if on the verizon version of straight talk

anything else, the answer no, it won't work on the verizon system
in most cases even IF compatible, verizon won't allow it, and the standard answer is NO

what you need to do, is to find a used phone, the verizon version of this phone
may exist, purchase that, then go into the verizon corporate store, and ask them switch phones on your account

IF your jitterbug Flip, is with Great Call, it is compatible with Verizon
and is probably on the VZW network, because Great Call is a VAR , like boost and straight talk, it does NOT own any towers or equipment

The Jitterbug phones are locked to the GreatCall company. They use Verizon's cell towers, but they sell their own service plans. Their service is intended to be very senior-friendly. For example, you can press "0" on the phone to reach an "operator" (customer service person, like the old landline days). Customer service can add phone numbers to the phone's address book. You can get services such as medication reminders, a daily check-in call, a live nurse call, 5Star Urgent Response (like Life Alert). I'd say Jitterbug/Greatcall is best for people 75+ years old who have never used a cell phone before.

  • Depending on how old the phones are, you might not be able to do it. It used to be we (when I was in the business) could switch some other carriers over to our service. Some we couldn't - they had the mfg program software in them that prevented it. Some software we could break and some we couldn't

If you have both phones in hand, transfer the sim card and see what happens. If it doesn't work, go by Verizon's office for a visit.
