Jeep Liberty 2011 Tow Package

I don't understand the "I can pull 5000 pounds, without 2000" part of your question?

As to what the tow package will include, you'll have to call the Jeep / Dodge dealer. Tow packages vary from vehicle to vehicle. It could include the hitch itself, the trailer electrical plug in, a trailer brake controller, transmission cooler and possibly other items.

the way I read it - with the tow package, the Jeeps Liberty's towing capacity is 5000 pounds. without the tow package, the capacity is 2000 pounds. really kind of easy to figure out.

Now that you explain it, it is simple. Though it does seem strange that the tow package would add that much capacity to such a small vehicle.

I would ask about the tow package on a site like LOSTjeeps.com. Not sure what. The difference is with the gas version.

If I remember correctly, back a few years ago when I was looking at jeeps as tow vehicles, there was a sentence in the manual that mentioned a 32' frontal max max when towing. That's about 8'X4' .

Just checked... see page 403 of your manual.

Edit to add - with the trailer tow package it can be up to 8'X8' or 64 sq. ft.

At the very least, it sounds as though the tow package has a beefier hitch. There may be other upgrades as well; commonly things like a transmission cooler (for automatics), wiring for a brake controller, etc. are included in tow packages. Sometimes drivetrain and/or suspension changes are also included. I don't know specifically what all it would include for your Jeep.

You probably could tow 4000 pounds safely if you upgraded the hitch with an aftermarket one, installed whatever other basic equipment is needed (like a brake controller if applicable), and possibly made a few other changes. Assuming you have a 2000 pound hitch currently, you certainly can't tow twice that with any adequate safety margin.

Thanks everyone, yes it seems crazy to add 3000 pounds in capacity with this package. Which is not the hitch at all but some stuff done to the car like a cooling system on the transmission. I think.

Cooling system upgrades can be crucial. If the tow package had extra cooling, then you need it for your towing or you risk wrecking your transmission or something. But auxiliary coolers may be available in aftermarket to bring your Jeep up to snuff.

wow, that sounds high. I have an older one (2003) and it struggles to tow my open aluminum trailer with an 800lb quad on it.
