They are very strong, but at the same time fragile. Pressure does nothing to them, but if you step on one on gravel, you will have a soaker hose.IMHO, they are perfect for a spare emergency hose, but not for every day use.
My observations: Are they safe for potable water as used in an RV. Some are, Some are not Are they safe for potable water as used on a farm YES, but that's a different use
Can they stand up to city water.. YES, when new.. However they tend to age quickly.
Can they be easily fixed when leaks happen: NO.. Where as standard hoses often can be fixed.
We use the collapsable hoses that have metal ends. I use two of them for my black tank flushes where they aren't under constant pressure. It's really nice to store two 50' hoses in such a small space. So far, we've been out for 4 months straight and they're still going strong.
Thanks for all the quick replies--looks like stick with the tried and true hoses -- maybe keep one of the collapsible hoses for emergency and odd uses like washing the rig etc. Thanks again, Radar.
Are you talking about the roll up hoses or the "AS SEEN ON TV" ones. The ASOTV ones cannot be left on all the time or they will burst. Read the label....Dennis
I was given one as a gift when I started full timing. I really liked how light it was and how easy it was to store. I did not use it as my 'regular' drinking water hose because I just really did not trust it (and I don't think it was rated for that anyway). I used it for washing my truck and other odds and ends.
My mistake was to leave it outside curled up next to the water spigot throughout my winter stay in Arizona. I turned on the water one day and a portion of it swelled up like a snake that had just swallowed a passing VW. I watched it, enthralled, and after about 30 seconds it burst. It was composed of two layers - The outer material, which provided all it's strength, had deteriorated due to sitting out in the sun.
We went thru 3 of them before finally giving up. Every one swelled up and burst. I would not try to use one with an RV. (or even at home for that matter)
