Hurricanes do spawn tornadoes. But that is not the discussion at stake.

Unlike other types of storms, with a hurricane (the storm the OP is referring to - not tornados), there is a big window of advanced warning and usually very accurate storm path predictions. While it is nice to know that people will share their property, the best advice in this case is to flee.

But if 60 miles is all the time yo have to travel, isn't it nice to know somebody gives a ^@%& enough about you to tell where there is a place that might be a little safer? If you're trying to escape the wind, hail and tornadoes those 60 miles might be just enough to save your rear. And no one knows yet which way winds or tornadoes are going to turn do they?

In theory, it is a great idea-one I would consider if I needed to get away from SW Florida in the event of a storm near us (Ft. Myers). .
As many have said, 60 miles is nowhere near far enough to be safe in RV in a storm larger than Cat1. While you may be away from the flooding and storm surge, you are still vulnerable to winds and other severe elements such as hail and tornados.

60 miles is a lot better than those along the coast . Actually 60 miles is a long way , most canes will loose about one MPH for every mile over land . I have lived in Daytona Florida for 60 some years and have never ran from a cane .
This storm that is here know is no threat for wind damage unless a tree falls on your head , the danger will be flood damage , same with most storms . Luckily where this storm is headed is not very populated , largest town is Perry Fl .
No one is worried about it except the TV stations .

That's wonderful to offer folks a place to go but I have to agree that 60 miles isn't very far inland from a big hurricane...I'd go 600 miles inland but that's just me!

I lived near Charlotte when Hugo went through, even that wasn't far enough...took out 12 trees in our yard and the power was out for 2 weeks. We had hurricane force winds that literally shut the whole region down for weeks!

We have acreage near the Wyoming/South Dakota border and not in tornado alley...a great hideaway during hurricanes! If anyone is willing to tackle our rough dirt road...

Everyone just needs to plan ahead and get as far away as possible to avoid being in danger or in the way of rescue workers.

Bob, you were the original poster, now you suddenly have Andrea headed your way, do you need to run away? several of us on here are west of where the latest news says the storm is heading.

I have 23 acres in middle georgia, no "hook-ups" yet, but far enough away from either coast to be used for such times.

Bob, you are one in a million. I'm hear is South Louisiana and evacuations are almost the norm in late August. It is wonderful how everyone comes together in the wake of a hurricane.

I will keep you in mind for a storm headed north west. Usually we just head north and worry about finding a campground once we get far enough north. For Gustav we stayed the 1st night in a WM parking lot in Brookhaven, MS which took 12hr to get to, then continued on the next day to Coffeville, AL.

Everyone in the campground was an evacuee and all pitched in to help each other, it was just like being at home.
