- RustycamperpantExplorer896 Miles in one day. Cape May New Jersey to Sugar Grove Illinois. Whew.
- GordonThreeExplorerI relax when I reach the destination. If I'm relaxing driving there it would be time to turn around before even arriving.
I tried a relaxing drive to Alaska once, taking it slowly once leaving CONUS. Problem was, got to Alaska with terrible weather and wild fires.
Since I drove so leisurely I didn't have a huge surplus of days to wait it out. Just turned around and started the leisurely drive back. Canada was super expensive but the weather was great.
If I make the trip again I'll probably skip Alaska and focus on the Canadian Rockies instead. Mountains are just as beautiful and it's a week closer. - memtbExplorerFrank55, I’ll try a slightly different approach on an answer. Make that 550 mile day, and then you’ll know what you can/should do. Experience is a great teacher!
- LantleyNomadMy RV travel is purely recreational. I use my RV to travel the USA with my family, relax and have fun.
When I was younger and more energetic/foolish I would tow/endure 700 miles days.
However now that I have wised up, I realize vacations are for relaxing and do not have to be an endurance challenge. Driving excessive distances just to get THERE is too much like work. I go RV'ing to escape the rat race. I do not need to travel with my RV at a rat race pace.
After making a Canon Ball run you are generally are too tired to enjoy the destination you exhausted yourself to get to.
350 miles or so is enough. Pull over find a pool, open the cooler and we are vacationing at wherever that puts us. Enjoy the evening/town/location you are at and set out in the morning fresh, ready and alert.
I've learned that vacation is a state of mind not a destination.
An endurance mission no longer fits into my state of mind when on vacation. - Edd505ExplorerCommercial driving 450-500 a day. If you average 50mph with fuel stops, food, pit stops, etc. you will be doing well. Your wife's right 550 miles is too far, plan your day by hours. Eight hours will be a good day giving you time to rest.
I'm retired so 200-300 and I'm done. - dodge_guyExplorer III just did the Yellowstone trip from the Chicago suburbs. My first day was to Chamberlain SD, 700 miles, apptox 12 hours. Then from there we went to RedLodge MT 500 miles and 11 hours (we detoured through The Badlands in SD. When you are pressed for time you have to make do with what you have. It helps to have a very comfortable vehicle and a well setup trailer/RV.
- naturistNomadIMHO, ideal is about 6 hours drive time, which translates to 250 miles. I did 425 once, and man was that tiring. If you want to do 550 miles, you are going to start your trip exhausted and not catch up until you arrive and have a couple days to rest. It's doable, but not enjoyable. Just saying.
- oldokieExplorerwe traveled from Skagway,Ak. to Okla.City in a 1997 gmc pickup and 24 ft jayco trailer in 6 days. This was right at or over 600 miles a day for 6 days in a row. I was 62 at the time and my wife did not drive a single mile.I am now 75 and could not do it again if my life depended on it.
- fly-swatterExplorerDid 600 once, but only once. Usually no more than 300 per day if on a long trip. I get lots of time off in the summer months so it works for us.
- PenManExplorerI've towed over 1000 miles several times but never two days in a row. We go to Charlotte from Albuquerque, about 1650 miles, in two days.
