New 4X4 truck

Traded my 2004 Dodge 2500 5.7 gasser with a 3.73 axle that was rated at 9400 lb towing. Have towed my 2007 5er w/8,000 dry weight for 8 yrs now. Only trouble was pulling the RV out to Utah & Colorado last summer ( I knew the passes would be extremely hard to get over ). My new 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 4X4 has a 4.10 axle and susposed to pull 14,000 lbs. I value the "veterans" on this forum more than I do a car salesman. From the information above, should I have a much easier time pulling my 5er in Colorado this summer? Thanks for your advice.

  • The biggest advantages you gained were a 6 speed transmission over the Hemi's 5 speed, and the 4.10 over the 3.73.

The GM 6.0L Vortec isn't much more powerful than the Hemi you had.

The 10 year newer truck will be a big change too in features and comfort.
  • My 2015 Chevy sticker says 2880 payload. Why does evryone one here think that is gospel when tires are what you need to be concerned with.
  • Wow,

You where able to find a 2500 GMC that has 3,100 pounds of cargo rating?

Your pin weight is probably close to 1,800 pounds, the hitch around 200 pounds and my guess is that you will have 600 - 700 pounds of passengers and other stuff in the pickup when camping. . .

    Fred.
  • I have one for a work truck and it will pull just fine as long as you dont mind the tach hovering around 5k.
  • I would guess the 6.0 since he has the 4.10's.

I would think the new tow beast should pull the trailer a lot better than your old truck. With the 4.10's, and the 6spd trans, you should be all set!

    Congrats on the new truck!

    Post some pics up!!!
  • Congrats on the new truck. If you are looking for a "much easier" time towing, I hope this gives it to you.

What engine is in the new ride?
