Paying in full before delivery???

We decided on a trailer to replace the fifth in the signature. Initial discussions were with the dealer to order in a model equipped the way we wanted. Ordering was fine, as we did not want to actually take possession of the trailer for a couple of months. The only pressure was to get the deposit down, and order in, before the end of the month, so the dealer could take advantage of (and pass along to us) the various incentives and show savings offered by the manufacturer. Of course not detailed to us, but since I was only concerned about "out the door" price, the details didn't really matter. The warning was that waiting until after the end of the month would mean a much higher price, as the dealer would not get the same incentives. Typical "decide right now" sales tactic, I assumed, but not a biggie as we were ready to commit, and ordering would meet our timeframe.

During the course of the financial paperwork signing, they suddenly "discovered" that one equipped just how we wanted had been received that day, and could be delivered any time.
The conversation and paperwork changed to straight out purchase. Thank goodness I left my checkbook at home! We left with them stressing that even with a deposit, we had to send a check for full payment ASAP.

The next morning, I sent a note informing them that I would not be fully paying for a unit we would not see (nor do a PDI on) for over two months. I would do that on the day of actual delivery.

The response has been that I could come out early to do a full PDI, pay, and they would hold it until I really wanted to pick it up. Their reasoning was that otherwise they (and I) would loose any mfg. incentives/discounts.

While I can do that - it sounds fishy. Anyone have more knowledge about how these arrangements work between dealers and mfgs? Hard to see why the mfg. might disallow a "discount" on an in stock unit, but not on one that has to be special ordered.

Yeah, standard advice is to run away..but in the end, we get what we want at a price we like, but with the inconvenience of driving a couple of hours for an additional visit.

Just a ploy for the dealer to get money in the bank right now, rather than later?

  • There's a new sucker driving in as we speak. Don't be it. Your terms or forget it. Amazing how helpful they can get.
  • I've seen this often in forum discussion - many just don't seem to understand that dealers purchase their stock from the manufacturers, they're never "on consignment". That means in this case where the unit in question was already at the dealer that it would have already been paid for and therefore any incentives for the dealer to purchase the unit would have already been accounted for. In other words, there is no price advantage to the customer to pay for this unit now rather than later when he picks it up. Clearly the dealer is wanting to get his money now rather than later, but that should be his problem, not the customer's. The argument that end-of-the-month incentives would be lost if the unit wasn't paid for in full before the end of the month is hogwash. Personally, if I didn't want the trailer for another couple of months there's no way I'd pay for it in full before then.
  • ^^^^I agree, with the offer to do a full PDI before paying, and they would store the unit until you pick it up sounds like a fair deal to me. We had the dealer store our unit until we could pick it up and that was for about 3 months. Saved us buying it and then paying to store it. Sometimes "A bird in the hand...".
  • A lot of companies offer dealer incentives to move units, yes a lot of time there is a time frame to receive these incentives. Same with tires they usually have incentives during the slow time to move tires, just bought a set of four received 75. gift card.

When I ordered a new 5th wheel I put down a 2500 deposit and paid the rest when the unit came in.

Did you want the dealer to wait until spring to be paid for the unit? I think the dealer offered you a fair option of doing a full day PDI paying for the unit and holding until spring.
  • Now I don't like to any dealers or any sort, but as a dealer I wouldn't want to hold it for 2 months with just a deposit. It's taking up space and if the incentives deal is true, then I'd imagine those would go away.
If you're not able to drive a couple hours then either don't buy it, or buy it and let them hold it until its "convienent" for you.
This sounds more like a fickle buyer not a shady dealer .

    That says it all.
  • Was the dealer's mouth moving????

I would never pay in full before delivery meaning PDI and actually taking possession. I would also also never pay in full on a new rig without having a photocopy of the signed off MSO by the dealer and of all his paperwork ready to file with the DMV. If I were in your position, I'd not pay and I'd forget the deal and go elsewhere (the same show terms should be available via someone else) or else if the deal is that irresistible, make the deal, pay the $ but take delivery now on the existing unit. You can store it somewhere for a couple of months secure in the knowledge that you actually got tangible value for your $$.
  • To clarify....

They are pushing you to take the unit they have on the lot and pay for it in full and they will hold it for you until you want to pick it up.

You are pushing to order a unit and wait two months to get it and pay for it in full at that time?
