Turn left, then make a U-turn. Say what?
Just a rant on the wonders of the technology age...
Arrived in Reno yesterday after a fantastic 3 day drive from BC. Never been here before and planned on relying on the Tom-Tom GPS to get us quickly and easily to our casino RV park (esp. being tired, hungry and in need of a restroom).
First thing we discovered is that the freeway has a lot of on and off ramps closed for construction but the Tom Tom apparently didn't know that. :M They have those plastic bendable posts dividing the lanes and they are oh-so-close on each side, you can't see far enough ahead to see if you can changes lanes and everyone is riding your butt and waving hello (not) because you have an RV. The GPS is frantically trying to get us to make a turn that simply cannot be made. On top of that, DW is frantically trying to make sense of it all and I am frantically trying to make sense of her. Thank goodness the casino hotel has a big logo at the top that can be seen for miles 'cuz that's what saved our bacon. Had it not been for that, we may have ended up in the desert...
Later we go out to find the Walmart that we saw on the way in to get a few things. Honey - it's just down the road, remember? Sure. Foolishly into the darkness and unknown we go, yet again to rely on 'ol Tom Tom. It obviously didn't sink in earlier that Tom Tom clearly did not understand that there are essentially no on & off ramps for the freeway. :M Tom Tom seems to think the only way to get around town is via the freeway. Turn here, turn there, drive 1/4 mile then turn... Tom Tom is having a spaz attack (younger folks may not know that term). We finally get to within sight of the Walmart and I decided to make a shortcut through a parking lot. Big, big mistake. To make a long story short, after a lot of screaming at Tom Tom by both of us, the final straw came when it said to make a left turn, then make a U-turn. :? Are you kidding? Where I come from, that's the same a right turn. Right? Apparently not when in Reno... That's about when we turned Tom Tom off and found our destination the old-fashioned way - looking for a big sign at the street entrance.
For the record, DW and I always argue about the use of technology versus an old-fashioned paper map. I'm formally trained in technology, but I'll gladly use a paper map any day of the week.
Sure hope the Casino is kind to us. Need to win enough $$ for a new GPS. :R
