aux. batteries won't charge with shore power

Ok, I called fleetwood to get a qoute on a new converter and find out where it is to see how difficult it would be to replace. the original service tech guy I talked to said there was no fuses on the converter and that it was most likely bad. It took talking to three different service techs to find out where it might be? I then called the parts area to get a price and thank goodness i asked him about fuses, and he said, yeah there should be two fuses on that converter. After finding it and attempting to unscrew it from the floor under the bed, I discover there are two 35 amp fuses on the back side of the unit you can't see, and barely access when attached the way they have it. Both are blown. Could not find anyone with 35 amp blade fuses, so waiting on ones I ordered online. Hoping that $7 fix works.

To test a converter, make sure 120 volt power is actually GOING INTO the converter. This isn't the last of it. Read on...

12 Volts has to DEPART the converter. If you have an integrated system where the charging unit is part of the fuse panel you must INSURE the positive and the negative charge wires are connected electrically to the wires that go from the charger to the battery. Simply checking a receptacle, "Oh there's power, the converter must be bad" is insufficient troubleshooting. There are connections AT and WITHIN the converter that must be checked both visually AND with a meter. But a novice grade examination will have a perfectly good converter hurled out the back window and a small stack of currency hurled from the bank account. Your choice.

Just because the converter is not putting out does not mean it is it's fault. Have you tested the 120V plugs? Are you actually getting 12oV to the socket where the converter is plugged into? I have not seen where you have traced the 120v back to either Gen or SP. Before spending more money, I would verify that power is getting to the converter.

My converter is under the refer. you remove 2 screws and the wood panel comes off and the converter is behind it. The converter is held down with 4 screws. too remove power disconnect the hot side of the coach battery.
Since you were doing things to the batteries, the converter has 2 fuses on it you could check them.

Your converter is likely where your circuit breaker and DC fuses are are located. Before you replace converter make sure it's actually the converter that's the problem. Check the circuit breaker controlling the converter, make sure the fuses on the converter are Ok, and test the electrical output of the converter at the converter - it's possible the converter is OK and the problem is something like a bad auto reset circuit breaker located near the battery.

If you have to replace the converter check out bestconverter.com - it has a section where a number of people have posted DIY info on how to replace the converter - not expensive nor difficult if your comfortable with electric stuff.

Fleetwood can very quickly tell you where your converter is.

If you are comfortable working with wiring, replacement is not difficult.

STRONGLY suggest you upgrade to a smart converter. Not much more $$ than the "dumb" ones.

Once you determine what you have, finding a smart replacement will not be difficult. Post what you have and we can help.

Converters are easy to get and easy to install. I found my upgraded converter replacement on Amazon. Your converter is usually not very far from your house batteries.

As it turns out. The batteries were not charging with the generator or shore power. After checking everything with the voltage meter, it is determined that the converter is bad. We used a battery charger to help keep the batteries charged while on vacation, which worked well as a temporary fix as there was no time to replace before leaving.
Now the question is is this a difficult task to replace on a coach? I am not sure where the converter is located and my dealer can't get me in until late May.

Here's a SWAG since the converter should work the same on shore power and generator. Are the Fleetwood Storms 30A? Or was the Shore Power 50A cable replaced with a 30A. OP says the unit is 30A. If this is possible, then on SP only one hot leg is getting power through the transfer switch but when on generator both hot legs are energized. Is the convertor on the possible dead leg? JM2¢...

I am wondering if your transfer switch may be dropping a leg when on shore power and not powering the converter.
