  • thanks every one if it keeps making noise I will replace it with a valve this check valve is for winterizing so pink stuff does net enter heater
  • If you use an adjustable pressure regulator you can try changing the pressure a little. It may eliminate or change the frequency so it isn't as objectionable. Or you can upgrade or remove the check valve as others have said.
  • Brass check valve have less noise and usually have a larger orifice than a plastic valve. the Noise is the resonance of the water rushing around the smaller orifice that is part of the spring loaded check valve. I have not really heard of this problem in years. Years ago, California built RV's, California Plumbing code required check valves on both the Input and Output of the water heater and we used to get that noise on those because of having 2 small restrictions instead of the normal 1 on the Input side. California modified that part of their Plumbing code years ago and now only requires the check valve on the Input side. Go to a brass check valve. Doug
  • Mine makes all kinds of racket but it is not worth the effort to get to it to fool with.
  • My heater don't have no check valves anywhere, thank God ! And those I know that had them, got rid of them.
There are at least 3 overheating safety devices, check valves not being one.

They chatter/hum when crud is hung up inside them, or when o-ring gets dislodged on plunger
When crud gets inside they are junk...course they are junk to begin with.
When o-ring gets dislodged you can reset but you have to remove to do so.

You could disassemble and try to clean out crud.
You could replace with another one that is just another piece of junk also
You could replace with a $$ Brass one (all brass internals.....not plastic like ones sold for RV)

    OR
You can remove/do away with and install a shut-off valve.
    (THIS^^^^^^^)

Check valves are used caused they are cheap, fast to install and cut down on number of valves/connections.
Only used to stop backflow when bypassing WH during 'winterizing'

don't they also get used if it overheats (say the overheat switch fails)?

  • It may just be resonating because of how tight it is. Might try and either loosen or tighten just a bit. Try opening the valve a few times also.
