- azrvingExplorerIt will work. When they fail you can upgrade to two gp 29 or six volts. The important thing is to not discharge too deeply. Get a digital volt meter installed where it's easy to see. Stay above 12 volts. Going down to 11.7 or so isn't going to instantly kill them but I just always stay above 12. When you store it disconnect the battery cable or get a battery disconnect switch. If charged properly and not discharged too deeply you may be surprised how long they last. I have one gp 27 that is doing it's 9th summer of work this year and will then sit for 7 months again in the cold with a battery tender.
If you consider 6 volters remember they are taller. - beemerphile1ExplorerIt isn't ideal but you can do it. The result won't be any cataclysmic failure, the batteries will just have a shorter life.
- doughereExplorerMy first choice would be to do something else with the existing Group 24, and get 2 6V GC's. They are are better designed for deep-cycle use than standard 24 / 27 car/Marine-dual use.
If you don't want to start over I'd get a second battery the same as the one you have now. When they expire, see my choice above.
Doug - Matt_ColieExplorer IIIf the 24 is brand new and you are buy the 27, you will get some gain. You will never get the combined capacity of the two because lead/acid batteries never play nicely in parallel. Keep some baking soda handy.
Matt - RoyBExplorer III suppose one will run down before the other will...
Probably the only issues will be when you are charging them at the same time. They won't charge identical and that may cause you some performance problems...
I run three each Gp24 12VDC general issue INTERSTATES... I'm getting a good 250AHs capacity out of the three... Hold me good for the things we want to run off the battery bank until 8AM the next morning. Then I fire up my 2KW Generator and run my on-board PD9260C Converter/charger and using the smart mode charging I can get my battery bank from its 50% charge back up to its 90% charge in a quick three hour generator run time...
If the two batteries work against each somewhat the best battery being the GP27 will most likely be drawn down to the GP24 battery performance wise...
I personally would try to keep the batteries the same type as well as same age... i.e. buy two GP27's for the Trailer and keep the GP24 to stay in the truck bed to help support things as needed...
