- RJsfishinExplorerI saw video of a guy completely dismantling an eu1000, and several times he used a hammer on his "flips" screwdriver for some stuck screws. I wondered why not a little impact driver ??
I mite tear into it,.....the easy stuff. If its looking too complicated when I get to the inverter/wiring part, I can always about face on it (not likely)
But I hate those jobs where you need a shoehorn and an act of congress to stuff wiring and stuff back into a space that you swear to God could not ever have been in there !! if ya know what I mean.Huntindog wrote:
I just did both of my 2000s. Never did a 1000, but I bet they are very close to the same.
There are several articles with pics on the net that I viewed first.
It is not real hard, but you need to be prepared for 2-3 stuck screws. a penetrating oil and dremel will make it easy. - HuntindogExplorerI just did both of my 2000s. Never did a 1000, but I bet they are very close to the same.

Yes, pull as straight as possible. There's another bend the rope has to do inside.. not much you can do about that.
If you pull up on the rope while starting, it drags the rope across the top of the hole in the case and can cause premature wear. - opnspacesNavigator III can't help on the procedure, just a theory on why it broke. I have seen posts on here that people have broken the rope on their eu2000 by pulling up instead of pulling out. Now I know yours is only a 1000 but the failure is probably the same. If you pull up on the rope while starting, it drags the rope across the top of the hole in the case and can cause premature wear. I know that doesn't help in the repair, but might help in prolonging the life of the replacement.
- RJsfishinExplorerThanks for the last 2 helpful posts.
I'll face it, me and little small stuff have never gotten along real well.
This just may be one of very few times that I let the shop do it. - 2oldmanExplorer II

From what I saw at the John Deere shop I took mine to, you're going to disassemble the unit. Doesn't look easy. It was only $40 to have it done. Saved me a lot of time.
I need to replace the starter rope on my eu 1000 Honda.
Anyone done the job, or know how difficult it mite be ? - robert_at_hondaExplorer

I can't find it on U-tube.

Per the shop manual:
-Remove front cover
-Remove control panel
-Remove muffler protector
-Remove maintenance cover
-Remove side cover
-Remove fuel tank
-Remove inverter
-Remove recoil starter
Then, it's five pages on how to fit a new rope. You and skip this and replace the starter itself, fully assembled. List price is $17.64, while the rope alone is $3.84 list.
A shop manual is strongly recommended if you want to DIY.

Caveat: I work for Honda, but the preceding was my opinion alone. - RJsfishinExplorerAnd they accuse me of smart assed uneducated answers. Difference is, I can take them, and even answer back w/ a little more civil answers.
1st, I have no idea how (other than factory defect) the rope got (severely) damaged about 1/2 way out,.....it should not have happened.
2nd, As most of us can figure out, solar doesn't work very good where ya can't depend on the sun shining at least 1/2 the day,.....like here on the coast in N. Bend. It works great in S Cal,....AZ. So yes, I rely heavily on my little Honda.
To answer the other poster, a link to replacing a rope on a lawnmower, doesn't really help me. - NinerBikesExplorerI thought your 190 watt solar panel system retired that thing?
Let me guess, you got some bad gas it had a hard time starting, and you wore the starter rope out? :h - DiskDoctrExplorer
