Winegard Traveler installation questions

I will be installing a Travler satellite antenna on my 5th wheel. The ideal location for clearance is on a 7 degree slope. Has anyone done a similar installation? I would expect the unit to take longer to find the satellites but, will it find them?
I would also like to operate the control box directly from my 12v supply rather than the 120v to 12v convertor supplied with the system. Has anyone else done this?

Once my Travler locks on, I shut it off and leave it off until I'm ready to stow it. Sometimes after it would have a good signal, it would start searching again which was very annoying. Holding the "Power" and "Select" buttons down for a couple seconds shuts it off without stowing.

My experience is just the opposite. We have a Travler that is used with our TT for boondocking. Never had a problem in the four years we've owned it. Only real complaint is that when you kill the genny to leave for the day, the Travler will have to go through the complete setup when you return and start the genny again. Takes about 10 minutes. Just a minor irritation.
  • I have NOT experienced any problems with the Travlers we have installed or any of my customers that had them installed by other facilities. QUALITY/CORRECT install is a BIG requirement for not having problems. The reason they supply 120 to 12 Converters is because they have found that trying to use the 12 volt RV system can have negative voltage/frequency problems on the operation of the Sat system. Doug

  • No to both of your questions. The antenna will never operate properly on a 7 degree slope. In most cases, there is a much more level area on a 5th wheel, it just means a longer coax run, even if it has to be across the top of the roof. I have a long coax run on the roof for convenience and the coax has been there for something like 7 years without in indication of degradation.
The controller is 120V powered so there is no 12V option.
