When I said "On resale alone I would go diesel!"
I mean you will get a higher percentage of your investment back AND the biggie is you will have a MUCH easier time selling a DRW Diesel than you would a gasser DRW.
The University of Michigan did a study on gas vs diesel back in '13 and depreciation was one of the items studied. They found that the depreciation gap really wasn't that much when it came to trucks after 5 years of depreciation. When comparing the depreciated values GM diesels held 10% more value, RAM diesel only 1% more value, and Fords took a -13% hit over their gas counterparts. Pretty much an sector wide wash.
Unless you find an appreciating one, like a classic, vehicles shouldn't be treated as investments. It wouldn't be wise to invest in something that you're guaranteed to get a negative return on. Instead they should be treated as consumables. You use them up until they're done then you go buy a new one. The more you use it and/or the older it is, the lower its value.
Buy a diesel because you need it. When you need the power and/or the tow/hauling capacity, but not for financial reasons.
