Adding Carrying Rack Above LP Tank?

We have a nice Yeti Tundra 65 cooler -- it's quite heavy and takes up quite a bit of room in the tow vehicle. In addition, our pup is light on its tongue (300# tongue weight on a 3080# GAVW), SOOOO ...

I am wondering about adding a flat rack over the LP tank. I would place the Yeti here and strap it down (it has built-in strap indents). Of course, the Yeti would have to come off before we pull the bed out, as it would interfere.

Is this a good idea? Has anyone done it? Would it be a custom-welding job? I think that the floor of the rack would have to be removable to make room to pull the LP tank when necessary).

Ideas/insights welcome!

  • Sounds like it will work great, in fact the idea is so good I might just build one for mine...I usually go toward the 15% tongue weight as stated in several books I have read, the PUP rides better that way,(for me at least)
  • Adding that much weight isn't adding THAT much weight as not even 100% of what you add will be distributed to the tongue. I have found that my PUP rides much better if I get more towards 15% tongue weight than anything less. I have weighed my tongue and it is ~420 pounds, which is about 14% of GVWR. The actual percentage is technically higher because I don't load quite up to the GVWR of the PUP (3,200 pounds).

Other than not making the bracket taller than the top of the wall of the PUP so your bed can slide forward, I don't see any problems. You would want to ensure an adequate bracing design to account for sudden changes in velocity and and direction. You wouldn't want an emergency action to cause it to break loose and go flying across the highway.
  • yes, there is a ready made answer to this problem. someone may remember the trade name used for it but a google search should turn it up.

  • Thanks for the comments so far.

Empty, the cooler is 27 pounds. I would guess it to be perhaps 70# full. And a rack itself might be 15#. Even if the rack plus loaded cooler were 100#, the tongue weight would go to 400# and the total trailer weight to 3180#. If tongue weight is supposed to be 10-15%, I'd be within the 318# to 477# -- in fact, that would be right in the middle at 12.5%. I'd probably have to put a light-colored tarp over it to protect a bit from the sun and any flying stones. Is there something else I might be overlooking? Does anyone know of a design they've seen or, better yet, a ready-made product?
  • If your thinking of hauling it empty, shouldn't be a problem. However, if you fill it up will food, drinks and ice then the added weight could very well present a problem. I have seen bicycle racks designed similar to what your thinking about.

Just be aware of where your bunk poles fit into the frame to make sure it doesn't get in the way of supporting the bunk.
  • there have been posts about such a platform that is available to store stuff over the LP tanks. don't remember the name, and is a little expensive but looked well made.

  • 300#'s for a 3000# pop up. You have your 10% tongue weight and by adding a cooler with all the beer, ice and etc might bring you over the limit
