- rickeoniExplorerIt just goes to reason that if Ford sells the most Diesel trucks they would have a proportional amount of problems. Just like the Captain I am deleted and EGRless. I get approx 15 MPG now which is amazing considering the weight of an F450. The biggest problem with any turbo diesel is the EGR system putting unburned fuel back into the intake tract, resulting in an ooey gooey mess. The issue with deleting and engine melt down is that most people do it for the power and not the reliability factor. Every manufacturer has design flaws that show up in vehicles after they are in the hands of consumers. I don't care what you drive and I hope everyone has the good fortune of a reliable vehicle no matter what the brand.
- dave17352ExplorerHow many miles on that rig Captain. I wish we could delete down here. My 2011 chevy duramax is great except DEF problems.
- captainjohn2008ExplorerI have an '08 F450, I've owned it for 3 years now and since this truck was new there has not been one single problem. I tuned and deleted, as most problems were related to emissions equipment. The fuel mileage picked up by 30% and power is up by, like lots, still not one single problem in 3 years since I did that upgrade. Fuel mileage: We have to remember these trucks weigh almost 10,000 lbs. so do you really expect to get honda fit type mileage??? (I own a Honda Fit and use it for none truck trips).Mantenance is the key to this engine, regular oil and fuel filter changes. I'm no expert and I am not "Brand loyal" just telling the truth. If I was to do it over again I, like other posters would buy something else, but if the truck is cheap enough it could still work out allright. My truck was $10,000 cheaper than the same year GMC 3500 so I figured if I get into a $10,000 repair I'm still not out any money. No problems with radiator or water pump so I must of got lucky on that one, or, not all of them were bad. JMHO.

Generally speaking, the 6.4 Powerstroke is marginally better than the POS Powerstroke 6.0. Many of the experienced Ford techs actually like a "bulletproofed" 6.0 better than the 6.4. Posting trouble free performance with only 25000 miles on the truck is basically meaningless...the 6.4 has had radiator and water pump issues that were very expensive to repair...It is a strong performer but like Donn wrote: "Decent truck if taken care of. The 6.4 has a less than stellar record and is generally noted as a fuel hog. There are better trucks out there for sure. Remember it was a IH motor at the end of the Ford/IH relationship.".
GM and Ram have a much better track record with their DuraMax and Cummins engines...

I bought it with 60k on it and put 40 k on myself, so I don't think my post is meaningless. So many Ford haters out there. - Cummins12V98Explorer IIIOP open your eyes to the other two brands.

Never owned one but based on actual owners responding here it would appear to be reasonably reliable but not great on fuel mileage. There will always be an entire chorus of Ford haters on this forum who have nothing but doom and gloom stories on why you shouldn't ever buy a Ford.
I agree there are Ford haters. However I am not one. I have had Ford's up to my current truck. I have Ford work vans.
Nevertheless Ford has had real issues with their PSD engines after the 7.3. To recommend a 6.0 or 6.4 engine to someone without making them aware of the issues would be misleading. I have nothing to gain or loose but I prefer to give an honest opinion.
One does not have to own the truck first hand to become aware of problems. Every vehicle will develop a history and reputation on its own.
I prefer the interior, chassis, and overall Ford truck better however their 2003-2011? Diesel engines have had issues and have developed a questionable reputation.
The only reason I have a Chevy now is due to the issues with Ford diesels of my era.
Currently Ford is shooting itself in the foot again by denying warranty claims on the 6.7 engine.
Maybe some do not want to hear any discouraging remarks about Ford.
I am not so brand loyal that I choose to cover up or deny real issues.
Hopefully someone may avoid making a big mistake by being informed.
I imagine the OP wanted all the info he could get both good and bad in order to make an informed decision.
well said...likely I am the "Ford Hater" that the Gypsy referenced...but as usual...he is so blinded by the Blue Koolaid, he does not see the tenor or the truths that I wrote...nothing hateful in my post...just the truth...and I have owned a few Fords...and they all disappointed me...
To the OP: Be very careful of the 2011 Ford 6.7...first year production had some issues...and the HPFP warranty denials are real, troubling and expensive to fix...the Blue Koolaid Kings will be here soon to tell you how much power they have...and how comfortable they are...and they are right...but Ford's warranty denial reputation on this engine is real..and deserved...GM fixes theirs and Ram uses a better HPFP, a proven design...Just the facts...no hate...good luck in your search...
oh..and I have the credentials needed according to the Gypsy...I owned a 6.7 POS...and a 6.0 POS...some of us learn at a bit slower rate...

If you are not dead-set on a diesel you might consider the V-10 in the Fords. Except for the spark plug issues these motors tend to be both powerful and reliable from what I've read here.
