Got to be a Ford Eco Boost with the max tow package. :S - wowens79Explorer IIII was looking at Jeep Wranglers just for fun, and asked him what the tow rating was, and he told me 8k lbs, when it is 1500lbs for the 2 door that I was looking at.
I always ask a question that I know the answer to, to see if they either know the answer, admit they don't know and offer to check, or just lie. - gwalterExplorer IIII had a brake pad tear off on the front brake of my 3500 Ram. The service department quoted me $600+ dollars. (300 for the rotor and 300 for labor and the brake pads. Luckily for me I have done a lot of mechanic work over the years and thought maybe I could do it myself. Several days later I stopped into the parts department at the same dealership and talked to the parts guy about doing it myself but the rotor seemed really expensive. He told me the torque specs on the 4 wheel drive front axle cover and I got the rotor for $160. I did it myself for $200.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt...This is so far off reality, I doubt he was purposely giving you false information or didn't understand.
Some of the 1/2 tons have a "tow rating" of 10-11k lbs...he may have simply misspoke and meant 10-11 1000lbs rather than 10-11 tons.
That's very gracious of you - and maybe it's true. More likely (IMHO) is that it was just ignorance. I haven't purchased a vehicle in 20 years where I didn't know more about what I was buying than the salesperson.
Huge difference between an honest...if possibly incompetent mistake and purposely false statement. - blt2skiModeratorGrit,
I Said on a freeway etc the max was better. BUT, I have had a number of local client with driveways, local roads that are in the 25-35% range. Like you, if I can't get to said job site....I'm screwed.
Low gears multiplying torque, is where it is at from my perspective, vs total power. Freeway, one needs HP, more us better. Low speed up grades, one needs torque correctly multiplied to get job done.
My IDI non turbo 7.3 with will pull more total lbs than either of previous trucks mentioned yet! Freeway......really slooooooow! :-)

Give the salesman a break, he was selling toasters last week
I tried to buy one from him but, he said they were all 440 volt toasters. :) - Grit_dogNavigator

I have found the sales department a lot more honest then those lying #$&@* in the service department
That was certainly true of Monroe Dodge where I bought my truck.
This is a 25 page thread of its own!
Love schister dealer stories!
Hey fwiw, knock on wood, I’ve had good luck with Tacoma Dodge parts and service dept. Have bought a couple significant parts there over the last few years and the parts guy was always knowledgeable and didn’t over charge me.
And just got some warranty work done there on the new car and they were very good to my wife and actually did it right.
At the same time, both Dodge dealers in Auburn were a **** show when my wife tried to get the car in there first. - Grit_dogNavigator

I recall an engineer in the lunch room at the Duramax factory, telling me to get rid of my 6.5td, a D/A combo would pull anything I had, better, up steeper hills/grades etc......yeah right!
Bought one a few years later.......Stalled the dmax on a STEEP grade the 6.5td went up with a 12K trailer in tow! yeah right says the engineer who helped design this motor! Turns out the dmax had less gradibility than my 5 sp 6.5! On a freeway grade, yes the 300+hp left the 185hp rig on the side of the road! More to towing prowess than just HP and Torque!

Marty, I love your posts, but you’re a bit stuck on dead center on gradeability. Actually a lot stuck. I believe pretty much everything you post 100% because you’re correct in your analyses.
However, to suggest that other than your home brew gradeability test, that a 6.5TD pulls anything like a LB7 is about 100% false and it makes your other analyses appear less valid.
I’ve had a couple 6.5s (briefly, because you could buy those frustrating P of S trucks cheap and always find a willing consumer who didn’t know anything about diesels to pay top dollar. ) that I fixed and flipped. Even drove one for a while. Great mileage and decent power compared to the predominant 90s gassers.
BUT a bone stock Dmax could, would and still will wax any of the 6.5s 6 ways to Sunday. Not even a contest, except for fuel mileage. And the bigger plus was you could actually reach your destination without putting a new PMD in it to get it to run! - philhExplorer II

Even if he confused ton with thousand, I highly doubt all of their 1/2 trucks could tow 10k lbs. - GrooverExplorer IIIt makes you wonder if the guy even knew what a ton is.
My brother had a late '70s Dodge pickup with the 225 six, a three speed and an aftermarket bumper that was stamped 12.000lbs. I lot of people thought that the number on the bumper applied to the whole truck.
