Most questions on insurance are about which insurance is the best. My question is little different. My brother is buying his first travel trailer. He was asking me about my insurance on my trailer. I have my truck insurance with State Farm but trailer insurance with Progressive. His insurance is with State Farm also and he is planning on adding the trailer to this policy. He said that the trailer will be tied to his truck insurance. He asked me why I had my insurance as a separate policy and didn't want to answer just because. I know with progressive we have full replacement value, covered contents etc.What are the pros,and cons to adding it to your truck policy where the trailer insurance is for damage or stolen and the truck would cover all liability?

I have both RV trailer and Truck covered with STATE FARM Insurance.. Everything we own is covered by State Farm... Since we pay things in two 50/50 payments seems like we are always having to pay State Farm just about every month of the year hehe...Who knows what you have until something happens and you end up on the short end of the stick...For me it is no big deal as I am only an occasional RV Traveler and more of a RV Camper. My daughter has State Farm as well and a big tree in her yard fell on her car parked in the driveway. It was covered by the State farm car insurance instead of the State Farm home owners insurance so who knows how things go...If I was a full time RV'er with no homestead it would be a different story I suspect...You hear alot of good things about Progressive Insurance for RV'ers but you may have to take the FLO lady along with you on a few of your trips... hehe..Roy Ken

I have the TT insured by the same company because, as far as I'm concerned, they have the best customer and claims service around as well as seriously competitive pricing. Other than that, I don't think there would be any advantage.

I have policies for my vehicles and my TT (seperate policies) and both are with State Farm. I will never be caught in a squabble between two insurance comapnies deciding who is going to pay. My TT policy is $50 deductible, is cheap and SF hit a homerun with me when it was struck by lightning and significant damage was done.

Saying "...the trailer will be tied to his truck insurance..." doesn't mean anything. The question is - is the RV covered at all times for "liability", "comprehensive", and "collision"? And how much is he paying for all of those coverages? If not, what does he have? I have all three plus it includes vacation liability, emergency expenses, replacement cost on personal effects and more.

As a "general" rule, bundling your home, auto and RV insurance with the same company "can" save you money. It just boils down to shopping around and comparing apples-to-apples (eg. same levels of coverage).

I did this a couple years ago and found, as example, some huge nationally-recognized companies do NOT like to insure any RV equipment, and it was reflected in their premiums, in one case almost $700 a year for a $23,000 TT.

So you throw a log on the campfire and a ember shoots up and caches the neighbors $100,000.00 5er on fire and it burns to the ground. That's called "liability" - and his truck insurance is going to cover it? I find that hard to believe.

In our case we have Mercury for the Truck, but they don't offer insurance on the trailer so our agent placed us with Progressive. If I did not have the trailer policy and I hit something with the trailer, I would be covered for liability only and damage to the trailer would not be covered, this the need for trailer insurance. I don't know about State Farm, but if they offer trailer insurance, he might get it cheaper if he can add it to his truck policy. Bottom line is you want to make sure the trailer is covered for damage if you wreck it.

I could get my trailer added to my truck policy with about the same coverage for less cost.

Unfortunately, the auto adder would not cover the purchase price only the current depreciated value.

I opted for the more expensive purchase price coverage because we intend to do a lot of travel in the next few years and on the road is where I think the higher accident risk is.

If I were parked at a CG or made only short trips I would probably have gone with the less expensive auto adder.

It is a gamble for you and the insurance company, hopefully the insurance company wins and I get a pat on the back for being a safe driver.

With the TT tied to his auto policy, unless he's able to add some additional coverage, I believe it would only be covered while towing.

We previously had Geico for auto and Allstate (UGH!) for homeowners. When I did my frequent price quotes, Geico was steep on the homeowners. I will say, we had over the years had claims with Geico and they were top notch. This particular time I checked with Farm Bureau and was pleasantly surprised at their rates and coverage, so they now have it all + our Medicare supplement. This should completely eliminate the back and forth between companies should there be a loss....Farm Bureau is going to cover it. Their rates have remained acceptable.
