Well, just remember he is a master tech, he is not the owner of the dealership (at least I assume he is not). He is apparently a mechanic doing his job.

Btw not doubting your experience. And with some people u can't fix stupid.

I am currently working on a 2013 cummins 6.7 in a ram 2500 miliage on truck 54k pulled engine hours and it comes up to 133k the guy leaves his idle well guess what warrenty pulled egr system plugged injectors pluged (not enough fuel filter changes for mileage 133k) egr valve destroyed. I have a '44 John Deere B at my house that was used by the wife's grandparents in the winter when the 3020 wasn't as reliable to start.

The traditional reason for leaving diesels running was the difficulty in getting them started in the first place!

People just never got past it when glow plugs and reliable electrical systems were developed. That's how the old timers did it, so that's how I'm going to do it. Refusal to change.

Find some of those "old start cold start" videos on youtube, and you'll see what I mean. Dad says they weren't much better when they were new. They had a couple of Massey Harris 44 diesels that they left on a hill because it was either roll them down the hill and pop start them, or get a gas tractor and drag them around until they started. The electric start was just not up to the task.

Once you got one of those things running, you left it running until you were done with it for the day.

You are correct.

Very true! many people are not aware of how truly dangerous a diesel can be. when I went to school for diesels the instructor said this here (hand on a Cummins) will kill you if your not careful!

I would not leave a diesel idling at an island that dispenses gasoline too because of what might happen if there was a gas spill at an adjacent pump. I've seen more than one diesel run away and grenade from gas fumes being sucked into the intake. A couple of them burnt down production tank batteries in spectacular fashion. Without a throttle plate or choke there's no way to shut down a diesel when its fuel is being supplied from an external source.

Don't forget that the water cooling on your 6.7 is for the electronics, and not the center section/bearing. It isn't a true water cooled turbo, and for cooldown purposes isn't really any different than your 98 12V. The HE351VE does have a little more mass to it, so it's slower to heat but that also makes it slower to cool.

Yeah EB on will not allow EGTs to drop, but above 180° the ecm generally kills the EB even in the on position.
