- WalabyExplorer IIWhat is the benefit of a capless system (other than manufacturer saving money and cutting corners)? My Jeep has capless as well, fuel door is latched.
I could google it but sounds like there's some folks here who already know the answer.
I still don't see the risk of DEF getting into the system, but I suppose if the plastic hose had a split, it is theoretically possible. Far more likely to get dust and dirt (my opinion), than DEF making the leap into the fuel filler tube and through the internal flap.
Mike - Perrysburg_DodgExplorerTroy for me the concern was dirt and possible water getting into the fuel tank. If the fuel door had a latch on it like all of our other vehicles have I would not worry about it at all. Our 2015 300 has a cap built onto the fuel door along with a latch. Why couldn't FCA/Ram do the same on the trucks?
I do agree with you though as to DEF getting introduced into the fuel system from a spill. Without a cap if someone was careless or even say the plastic hose had a split in it or poped out of the filler neck DEF could get into the fuel tank.
Even a small amount of DEF can and WILL damage the fuel system and engine. The first thing all of the manufactures do when confronted with a blown diesel engine running DEF is to ask for the fuel filter, fuel samples and sometimes the ECM.
I buy 100% of my DEF from the same truck stop here in town. I have never had any spillage nor have I found any white crystals like some have reported.
Don - blofgrenExplorerI bought my truck new and the plug was not there. I got ripped off, lol! :B

And that F150 doesn't have a DEF fill port right next door to the diesel fill port either just waiting for a spill to occur. I would most definitely have the MOPAR diesel protective cap.
An accidental spill? I've got a Ram CTD, and yes, the DEF port is next to the diesel fill port, but OMG, I can't imagine an accidental spill that would create an issue. Good grief..... just when you heard it all.
But, considering the source, Im not surprised.

If you "can't imagine an accidental spill" then why do you use the green plug?
Obviously enough concern has gone around that both ram and the aftermarket has produced a cap. Some here in this thread use a cap as well.
When I bought it (used), the green plug was there.. saw no reason to throw it away.
Even if it was gone, see no concern/reason why the DEF would accidentally spill all in the tank.. With enough to actually cause a problem. Haven't spilled a drop of DEF yet.
I don't believe they made the plug because they were worried about an accidental DEF spill.

That is usually what happens with anything new and people don't understand how it works. People fear what they don't know and they usually think of the worst case scenario to justify their fear. Instead of taking the time to learn about it, they revert to things that give them "peace of mind". This is why there are still people out there that change their oil every 3k miles even though every vehicle and oil manufacturer says you can go much longer.
And of course in our capitalists society there will those out there who will capitalise on these people's fears to make a buck. Does this mean there is something wrong with the product? No, it just means there are enough people out there that would rather spend the extra money to have "peace of mind" than to actually learn about the product because to them that is the easier way out. Troy were is the DEF filler located on the HD Fords? Same spot as my truck right? I mean the new F-150 3.0 diesel is not being sold yet so no a F-150 wouldn't have a DEF filler now would it? :p
Don
I understand but my truck has a standard fuel cap that provides a piece of mind
I looked and Ford does put a cap on their diesel trucks. Wonder if that will change with the next model upgrade? The 150's are capless right?
I don't know how the setup will be but the f150 have been cap less for a few years. My wife's vehicle has a cap less setup and I do like it.- WalabyExplorer II

I still have the little plastic plug that the truck came with. Year and a half and 20,000 miles and it still works great. When it wears out I'll buy a cap that fits - I do prefer having one on there. Not that any of this is germane to the thread.
Me too.. and, OBTW - when I fill up my DEF tank, I don't remove the green plastic plug, so the chance of accidental spillage of DEF fluid and it actually getting INTO the fuel tank is zero.
Some folks feel the need to create an issue no matter what.

I bought mine on eBay about 6 months ago. I've seen the Geno's version. It's probably the same cap. Just looked on eBay and they have some for sale for $16.49 (free shipping from the US).
Is that from Geno's? - Bionic_ManExplorer

I am not ignorant and know enough about the capless system to give me piece of mind. I actually like it. Both in my F150 and in my Ram.
I also like the capless system, even though I don't have it on my truck.
