Agreed. In this case the OP should be well within his numbers with an 8000-9000 GVWR trailer. Tongue weight might be close with Class IV, but a Class V hitch and a 1300lbs tongue weight is not bad if total payload is in the 2200 plus range.

When I was looking to upgrade form our then F150, I thought about the HD F150 3.5 in XL trim. super cab long bed. It built out at around $34.500 or so. I then started looking at Ram 2500 CTD's CC LB ST. They were in the $46,000+ range. After the current rebates of $10,000 it was just a little more than the HD F150, which would've had to be ordered and getting any kind of rebate was a gamble. Not totally apples to apples but it shows that it's not always cheaper to go with the 1/2 ton.

I just did a build out on the Ford site for an HD F150 Super cab 4x4 8' bed 3.5 and an F250 Super cab 8' 4x4, 6.2, both XL trim with equal interior upgrades.
The HD F150 was 37,135.
The F250 was 36,920

For $900.00 more you can get the F350.

That means that only 10-15% of the time will my truck need to be real TV. So, for me at least it becomes a little clearer. I would rather be comfortable and more economical in a half ton for 85% of the time than to have a truck that has capabilities beyond even my requriements for 15% of the time in a 3/4 ton. If the numbers work, there is no reason to not tow with a half ton.

If I was a full timer putting on lots of tow miles, the percentages would be flipped, and I would see it from the other perspective.

JJ I think you have a valid point everyone needs to consider their usage. The decision is different for everyone. The most important factor is to be aware your ratings and strive to be within them.
Using percentages is a bit of a slippery slope.
My daily driver is a dually. I drive a dually simply because of my RV. I could have a SRW truck which may make a better daily driver. However optimum/peak towing performance is what I desire regardless of how that affects my daily drive.
I imagine my usage is 75% non towing vs. 25% towing. Bottom line is I want that 25% towing to be as relaxed and enjoyable as possible. I am just as comfortable on my daily drive in my dually as I was with my Toyota Tacoma! However a SRW truck will never give me the towing performance of a dually.

I tow only 10 to 15 percent of the time and I daily drive a Ram 2500HD. In my opinion the new HD trucks are just as comfortable if not more so than the old 1/2 tons.

Max Tow brings it to 7700gvwr
HD Payload brings it to 8200gvwr (can you even get this without max tow?)

I don't have experience to have an opinion on your situation, but I can say that with a load near max payload, this truck feels much stronger than my previous truck did at its payload. Now, that might not mean a thing, but seat of the pants tells me this Ford is rated much more conservatively than my other truck.

The EB is really jaw dropping at how easily it tows. With my 4000# trailer there are not many signs that I'm even towing. Other than the mpg's of course. :)

The EB option was only $1100 when I shopped. Not sure how you're coming up with $4000?

Yes, max payload is available without max tow but only with the 5.0. Thats why the ecoboost is $3500 more. It adds max tow and xlt convenience pkg.

Is the trailer stabilization package standard or an option.
