Leaf peeping in Vermont with camper

I have not traveled in Vermont except to cross it several years ago. I am wondering about narrow roads and low clearances since traveling with TC this time. I am sure many of you have done it and looking for any advice.

Thank you in advance.

  • The color is just starting here in central NH so I would say in a week it will be great . I have never had a problem traveling throughout Vermont . Many roads are even better since the repairs from Irene . Be aware that most campgrounds will close after Columbus Day and will be crowded the 2 weekends before so plan ahead . During the week should be no problem . Enjoy .
  • We're just north of the northern Vermont border (the mountainous Eastern Townships sector, Quebec): the forests here are as green as a jungle. Very little to no leaf color change. This is the longest period of green leafing we've seen in this region in more than a decade.

I hope we see some color soon, or the leaves will fall "green" when heavy frosts hit in a week or two.

Those experiencing "colors" in Northeast this 2013 season: you're lucky!

After low '70s most of last week into Saturday, we'll be back into the '70s by Tuesday/Wednesday again...this is the wettest September I've seen in about 12 years.

Road clearance in Vermont: we've been all over Vermont (north/south/east/west) and have never experienced a width or height clearance issue. I suppose if you're driving on a private ranch/farm in Vermont, you may have these issues...enjoy :B
  • Thanks for the replies! I should have mentioned that I will be coming north from New Jersey the end of this week. If I have to wait for color, it won't be a problem.
  • Anyone have any pictures ? :)

I wish I could take a trip to Vermont!
  • Check out upstate NY on your way (we have some awesome views too), then cross into Vt. at the Canada border and then head south along the shores of Lake Champlain. Just starting to turn here with the maples leading the way. Have fun.

Just don't try Mt. Washington. Besides, there aren't any trees up there anyway.

    ummm....Mt Washington is in NH....
  • From Northern Vermont here. Leaves are at their very early stages of change. Weather this week calls for nice weather through the weekend. We have already had a few frosts. As for the traveling question, roads should be fine to travel on to see the colors. If you travel on some of the main scenic byways as listed on most maps there won't be any issues. The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont gets the color earlier than the rest of the state and IMO is the best area to go. May even see a moose or two! BTW, Mt. Washington is in New Hampshire!! PM for more info if you want. Happy trails!!
  • Hello chalet05. I just returned yesterday from a week in Northern Vermont. We went on some back roads that were pretty rough but had no trouble. Unless you really go off the beaten path you will not have any trouble. Enjoy your trip and don't forget to visit Ben&Jerrys icecream and Cabot Cheese. They are very close to each other.
The leaves had not changed much and the locals up there said because of the wet this year there may not be too much color, but go anyway it's a nice trip.
    Happy camping nm1oqrz
