Is 2 percent really typical?
DEF usage is about 2 percent of fuel usage. At 15,000 miles and 15mpg they should have used around 20 gal of DEF to their 16 actual.
We've got 12,000 miles on our '16 Ram Cummins. We pulled a 12k 5th wheel for 7,000 of those 12,000 miles. We've only used 8.5 gallons of DEF (1 percent). If we hadn't towed, I'm sure our DEF usage would have dropped to 4-5 gallons (.6 percent). That's in stark contrast to the 16 gallons of DEF this Nissan Cummins used after 15,000 miles (with little towing).
FWIW, I've noticed huge discounts on these Nissan Cummins online. Based on just MSRP, IMO they're not at all competitive; however, if you can pick one up for 20-25 percent off MSRP, I think this truck could provide some good value---even in spite of the high DEF usage, limited payload, and less than stellar MPG's. - drittalExplorerAlso, with the low steering fluid and other bits forgotten at the factory, we can't for certain blame the Cummins for using the 2.5 qts.

- HannibalExplorerIf we took a ride around the block with their drivers, we'd probably immediately see the problem with the transmission shifting and low mileage. Give it 30k and the brakes will likely be worn out as well.
- Camper_GExplorerThe comment about the 6 speed is not specific to the titan. Unfortunately, due to government fuel economy standards, most modern transmissions in trucks behave this way. My 15 Silverado i just traded in was that way and my 17 Ram i just purchased is similar, but not as bad as the Silverado was. A friend at workb told me his F150 acts similarly.
Thanks Uncle Sam! Lol. Unfortunately they are what they are. demiles wrote:

FYI, in the owners manual it says that during break in it may use oil and should be checked regularly. That's from Cummins.
I've never had a new engine consume this kind of oil.... I'll stick with my Power Stroke.
At 1800 miles my oil level has not changed even a little.
That's a good sign...Turtle n Peeps wrote:

Good God, this thing used up 25% of it's oil volume in 3 thousand miles! :E
Troy, you must have never owned a 6.oh with a bed plate leak! :B
Yeah they pretty much all have a drip from the bell housing. But they don't leak enough that you notice oil loss via the dip stick.- PowerdudeExplorer$352 dollars for engine oil and filter, plus fuel filter?
Allowing $52 bucks for engine oil and filter service at the dealer leaves...wait for it...
$300 for a fuel filter?
Wow...talk about being taken for a total ride.... - demilesExplorer

That does seem excessive, I've yet to see any XD owner report any significant oil consumption. Makes me wonder if it was low from the start and then discovered. At 1800 miles my oil level has not changed even a little. - Turtle_n_PeepsExplorer
