- goducks10Explorer2500 payloads vary by make, model and trim packages. Load the truck up with a lot of bling and you won't have much left for pin weight.
FWIW our 12 Ram CTD has a payload rating of 2176lbs. Our 5'er has a loaded pin of 17-1800lbs. All hitched up and loaded the rear axle load is 4900lbs, 1100lbs under the RAWR of 6000lbs. GVW of the truck is 9600lbs, we're at 9700lbs. GCVWR is 20,000lbs, were at apr 16,500lbs. Tows fantastic. I would go heavier if needed on the pin by maybe 400lbs and maybe 2000lbs on the GCVWR and be fine with it. But right now it's a blast to tow with this setup. - blt2skiModerator

With more than 3500 lbs. of pin weight it is time to consider a dually so the weight is carried by four tires instead of two.
I was doing good following your statement until here! One can get single tires that are good to over 10K ea. IE what class 8 tractors are using on the rear tandems and trailers! I can setup a single wheel rig with 19.5" tires and have over 10 close to 11K on two tires! If one is going to change add leaves etc to the spring pack, might as well look at upgrading the tires too! Duals are NOT the end all be all of towing or carry capacity. The ONLY reason for duals is the human factor. Other wise, singles that have the same payload capacity as 4 singles, will 9 out of 10 times out perform duals, from stopping, mpg traction etc.
Marty - wintersunExplorer IIThe RAWR is based largely on the load capacity of the two rear tires - which can be changed. The GM axle and wheel bearings is load rated by AAM at 10,900 lbs. but with two 3200@80 PSI tires on the rear guess which gates the load rating?
A crew cab will have a lower load rating than a crew cab as the manufactuer expects a 150 lb. person to be in every available passenger seat. The 2500 has a single leaf pack whereas the 3500 has two with the second serving as an overload spring. Easy to add SuperSprings to accomplish the very same thing.
With more than 3500 lbs. of pin weight it is time to consider a dually so the weight is carried by four tires instead of two. - whskExplorerwent from 2130 payload 3/4 ton to 5435 1 ton dually-do not worry too much now about pin weight-lesson learned!-whsk
- 4x4ordExplorer IIIThe new Ford diesel crew cab 3/4 tons weigh over 9000 lbs by the time you load up a family, 5th wheel hitch and fill the tank with fuel....so that leaves less than 1000 lbs for pin weight. My F350 SRW weighs 9200 lbs before hooking up to the 5ver.
- BedlamModeratorThey vary between brands. My 2005 Ford F250 PSD weighs 2700 lbs on the 9750 lb rear axle and originally had 6100 lb rated tires with a 7000 lb rated suspension. The RAWR reflected the lowest capacity of the rear at 6100 lbs which gave me 3400 lbs. My GVWR is 9800 lbs with an actual weight of 7200 lbs giving it 2600 lbs of payload based on the GVWR. GCWR on this truck is 23,000 lbs and FW towing is at 14,500 lbs which cannot be accomplished if you stay under GVWR but can be done if you watch your RAWR.
I have upgraded the suspension, rims and tires so I can use the more of the capacity of my stock Dana 60 front and Sterling 10.5 rear axles. As mine sits now, I can load the front to 6000 lbs (limited by suspension) and rear to 9000 lbs (limited by rims). - therinkExplorerFor comparison: my last fiver scaled in at 11800 with pin weight of 2300 loaded. My old truck was a 08 Silverado ext cab 4x4 gasser. Loaded and ready for camping I was about 200 over the trucks gvwr at at the gcwr.
I ended up upgrading to a SRW 1 ton and don't have to worry about that anymore. Lesson learned, if towing heavy, skip the 3/4 ton altogether. - BedlamModeratorJust an approximation from my side suggests most 3/4t trucks should be able to handle 12K lb FW's. Beyond that, you need to get actual weights of the TV and FW.
- blt2skiModeratorMy 2000 C2500 could handle upwards of 3500lbs! with me in it and a hitch! I would not try that with a crew cab version, but a striped reg cab can do that! Oh, I am 300 lbs shy of my dually crewcab 3500 can do!
as stated above, crew cab, gas, diesel, options...............
