removed bypass valve. now no hot water?

I replaced a leaking valterra 1/2" rubber hose with pex and sharkbites. Removed plastic factory 3 way bypass with brass sharkbite t. Now no hot water. Me thinks i messed up? Guess that vslve serves mote than 1 purpose? Would the easy yo insyall camco bypass kit that easily goes on watet tank fittings work? Instead of traring apart my pex brass sharkbite t? Thanks
  • yes everyone i replaced the removed factory bypass valve by brand called ecoploy from amazon. Many know about rv parts site called dyersonline.com from az. I alsp ordered the exact plastic water heater elbows with rubber inserts.
Oh yeah even got rescue tape from pilot truck stop. ouch pricey at $1/ft. There was no nearby ace hdwr or bass proshop .
Thanks again guys for the bypass valve education.

That 3 way was a cold water inlet AND the bypass depending on which way valve was turned.

Did you replace it with another 3 way valve??

NO, he replaced it with a "T"

If a 'T' was installed then water heater is probably still empty cause water would flow up thru bypass line and back against check valve in hot outlet so very little water would flow in thru cold inlet due to check valve being closed.

Hope OP fixes with another valve before turn electric on or he'll be replacing element also.

    HEY OP.....are you reading/following up??

The other issue could be a check valve in hot outlet nipple.......they are cheap plastic junk and fail. When they fail.no hot water comes out top nipple/hot outlet.

This is a one 3-way valve set up (cold inlet and bypass with check valve in hot outlet)

This is one 3 way system with check valve removed and a hot water shutoff valve instead

This is a 3 valve system........no check valve and individual shutoff valves (cold/bypass/hot) my favorite
  • Yup! The bypass valve must be normally closed for hot water. Replace it and you should be back to normal.
  • thanks for your reply. i had both elect. wtr htr switches off when i drained and flushed tank. i swapped the plastic factory valve because i hated the proprietary push on hose barb connectors.
    oh well more fun .

With out the Valve the water heater won't fill up...Hope you didn't have in on electric...

Why did you remove the valve in the first place?

The kit is easy, if you know what you are doing, I don't want to sound mean, but from your post i'd have someone help you with it
