RT-17, RT-16, and RT-400 between NJ and Buffalo NY?

Can you please advise whether RT-17, RT-16 and RT-400 is a good route between New Jersey and Buffalo, NY for towing a 34' travel trailer?

We would like to avoid low bridges/tunnels etc. that would interfere with our drive.

Is there a better alternative?
  • Regarding Route 17

North of the NY/NJ border in the Village of Harriman, NY there is a railroad bridge that is very low. The RR line is a spur that goes to an abandoned factory. There used to be a sign on the bridge that said clearance 12' 4'' but it is not there now. I am not sure of the exact clearance but 18 wheelers can't get under it.

You can bypass this bridge very easily. From NJ/NY state line take the NY State Thruway North (I-87) to Exit 16. At that point you can rejoin 17. This small section of Route 17 in the Village of Harriman has been a pain to tall vehicles for at least 50 years.

Other than this bridge, this is a good road.
  • I have used Rt-17 (I-86) from Binghamton, NY to Olean, NY many times with my 30 foot TT without any problems. I live in Olean and Rt-16/Rt-400 is one of two main routes to Buffalo. No problems on that route to Buffalo either.
