Changing Cruise Control on a F53

Hello,
We have a 2005 Georgie Boy Landau 3525 on a Ford F53 chasis. Our Cruise Control was getting stucked or turned off 2 out of 5 times we used it. We took it to a Mechanic back in 2018 and he said he disconnected. Now we have the time and money to fix it, but we don't know what's wrong with it. We took it to a Ford Dealership and they couldn't figure out what was wrong either.

Anyways, we are willing to fix it or even put a new cruise control system.

Does anyone know of a specialist shop on cruise control in Florida that can do the work for us?

Thanks
  • First find another dealer ship to use. They do not want to work on it. There are many items in this unit. The switch/stalk located on steering column or steering wheel. There is a switch located on the brake master cylinder line. There is a control unit which they could put anywhere. Maybe Doug will jump in later today. I not sure which fuse is use for this. Have you looked under the dog house for the unit or you are just having someone fix or replace it.
  • Most of the time on a Ford when the Cruise shuts off on its own it’s the small switch on the side of the master cylinder. My Excursion was doing that. It may be leaking internally and that’s by it’s turning off.

Could be. There was a recall once on this.

IIRC, the Cruise Control is integrated in the Engine Control Computer. Not much can go wrong as long as it is getting the correct information from the steering wheel buttons.

Correct. I don’t know if the F53 of the year in question has drive by wire of a standalone cable operated throttle body with a stand alone cruise module. I’m think it has a stand-alone system. Since it’s an 05 and thenF53 didn’t get the 3 valve until around 07 or so.
  • 1. Stand A lone systems went bye bye in the late 80's. Before that ALL Gas Class A Cruise controls were added by the RV builder and stand a lone.
    2. When the 90's started Chevy/Workhorse/Ford used OEM(their own) Cruise controls and I was out of the loop by the late 90's when support and parts for the older systems went away. We directed all Cruise chassis systems to Ford/Chevy/Workhorse as we had not parts or diagnostics available to RV service shops.
    3. A QUALFIED Ford service shop should be able to diag and fix a Ford supplied system, even one 20 years old.
    4. Find a shop that has qualified Ford Technicians. Doug
  • The two intermittent cruise shutting off issues I've run into on F53's and F59's are the mentioned cruise disconnect switch on the master cylinder and a weak brake pedal return spring. The 2005 F53 chassis was not subject to the Ford cruise switch recalls, but the switch is still subject to failure, just not the fire starting failure the recalls covered. A weak brake pedal return spring can allow the pedal to bounce and shut off the cruise on random bumps.
  • We have a F53, and there was a recall that had something to do with wiring and the cruise control. We had ours repaired under this recall in about 2015/16. Do a google search for recalls related to cruise controls on the F53 chassis , there are multiple recalls for various things.

The 2005 F53 was not included in the cruise control disconnect switch recall.
