diplomat/holiday rambler dst models

We are getting ready to purchase a upgraded diesel pusher. We have decided we really like the bath and 1/2 in the above models. We would love any feedback on these models. We are looking at the 2004-2006 models. We would also love any info on the recall of the ISL engine that was recalled in those years, we have heard it was recalled in 2005. Look forward to any feedback anyone could provide. Thanks to all!!!
  • I don't remember the serial #'s range, but the engines were "recalled" because of a wrist pin issue. Cummins did not repair the engines, but added a sensor that will derate the engine, and slow it down, if a failure is imminent? The thinking is/was that if the engine was past 20K miles it was OK.
  • Monaco made some good coaches during that time frame and the HR Diplomat qualifies. It was one up from the least expensive diesel (Neptune), but a good combination of quality and price. The ISL was an upgrade of the ISC engine and the only problem with the ISL I'm aware of is the one willpower mentioned about the wrist pins. It was a Cummins issue, not a Monaco or HR issue. Monaco also had problems with the trailing arms connecting the rear axle to the frame, as the arms were too weak. The only good option was to replace the arms with those made by an after market company, not those made by Monaco. I don't know if the Diplomat was included in that trailing arm problem. Probably by now the coach, if it did have these weak arms, already had them replaced. I wish I could remember which coaches and which years had those defective trailing arms. Sorry.
  • Some depends on what you're looking at..Remember to compare apples to apples....Diplomat is a Monaco MODEL. Holiday Rambler is a BRAND. Diplomat, in those years was the fourth in line behind the Dynasty, Executive and Signature. As such, it does not have the steel cage design as the top three. For the Holiday Rambler, they had the Endeavor, (Diplomat), Scepter (Dynasty), Imperial (Executive) and Navigator (Signature)..of those, only the Imperial and Navigator came in sizes greater than 40'...(Remember this is strictly IIRC, someone may correct me if I'm wrong)..Dennis

Here is the recall information (trailing arms) on the R4R and RR4R chassis in those model years....D

I would not worry about the ISL recall as by now the wrist pins would have failed. The trailing arms is not an issue as the DIP is a RR8R (8 airbags) not a 4 airbag. I WOULD be concerned about the amount of CCC and if it is using a 23K rear axle to get 3000 lbs of CCC. I would recommend looking at Dynasty so you will have plenty of CCC (9000+) plus the improved handling that the tag axle gives you. There are even some 38' tag in those years if you are worried about length.
*Dennis, what's with the picture of you with a suite and tie? DW's idea? When are you going to color in some more states in the east?
  • thank you all so very muchfor all the detailed information. Fishinghat, do you know where the Monaco knight fit in the Monaco coaches? we noticed that in some models of the.
k night it had a back bathroom or a nice separate back bedroom with a computer desk comfy chair and room for personal office. Does anyone know much about those coaches Monaco knight I mean?
  • Hello,

The 2005 Diplomat had the upgrade to the 400 HP ISL. It is a fine engine/transmission combo for the typical 31,000# traveling weight.

The 2006 has four more inches of interior ceiling height.

Both are good coaches. Our 2005 has 42,000 miles with few problems. We lost the inverter at 2,000 miles, but Monaco replaced it. The turbo seals failed at four years, but Cummins fixed that under warranty. Otherwise it has been very good. I like the stability of eight outboard air bags.

    Crespro

P.S. We used the FMCA program to buy Michelin radials (seven years on the OEM Goodyear tires). A 2005 or 2006 should have new tires by now.
  • I think I've narrowed down our search to the same thing you're looking at. I can't give any feedback based on experience, but I will have to subscribe to this thread and keep an eye on it. Will try to help in any way I can while we search as well.

Good luck and keep us informed.
  • Our 2006 Diplomat is the DST model. My wife wanted a bathtub and this is the model we decided on. The 1/2 bath comes in very handy for guests and also when traveling since the rear bath isle is blocked with the slide in.
The wrist pin recall was for ISL's built between Oct.05 and Apr.06, serial numbers 46543077 - 46603939. The recall did not fix the wrist pin issue. It only installed a pressure sensor on the valve cover which triggers the Stop Engine light if crankcase pressure gets too high. So the possibility of failure is still there. Let me know if you have any specific questions about the DST floorplan.

Could you post some pictures and measurements of the back wardrobe? Most pictures online don't show it well. We have 5 children and would consider using it as a baby napping area along with the obvious use for storage.

    Thanks!
