Onan 7500 watt maintenance coachman cross country

Good morning,

I am about to attempt performing scheduled maintenance on my Onan 7500 W quiet diesel generator which is installed in my 2003 coachman cross country delete 376 DS. It does not appear that this generator has a slide out to do the service will have to be preformed while the unit is installed in the coach. Has anyone performed a full maintenance on a unit which has been permanently installed in the coach? Is it doable?

I would like to perform an oil change and filter, water pump belt replacement, fuel filter, coolant replacement, temperature sensor and an thermostat. Anyone have experience removing the side panels to gain access while leaving the unit in place? Thanks for any help/advice
  • WE have the same setup (no slide) and we could not get the sides off while it was in the coach - we tried. To take it out of the coach, the front fiberglass panel has to come off and it had to be take out the front. We decided it was too much for us and we brought it to a Cummins Onan shop in Las Vegas. While they had it out, we had them do the complete maintenance. We had the hoses replaced as well as the other items you talked about. It cost us approx. $1000 plus we provided most of the parts since we had purchased them in hopes we could do it ourselves.

If you are handy and don't mind doing the work, you can remove the genset yourself. I dropped my Onan 7.5 Quiet Deisel genset out of a 2002 Winnebago Journey and did the full maintenance. I put some 6 X 6 timbers under the front jacks to get more lift, raised the front of the coach and used a motorcycle jack to lower the genset.

I did it by myself but would certainly recommend a second set of hands when lowering and raising the genset. It weights north of 600 lbs.

Was yours mounted in the front ? Do you think I can get the sides off without dropping the Gen set?

Yes mine was mounted in the front between the frame rails. I don't see how you can get the panels off unless you remove the genset from the coach. If you plan to do what Cummins/Onan recommends at 1,000 + hours (belt, coolant hoses, new thermostat, new temp sensor, valve adjustment, etc), you will need to remove both the top and side panels. I pulled the radiator and took it to a local radiator shop for leak check and cleaning.

Mine had some rust on the panels so since I had them off, I media blasted, primed and painted them.

I had the 1000 hour service done on my coach in January 2017 at Cummins Ocala, Fl. They had to completely remove my generator from the coach to accomplish this service as it is not on a slideout tray. The outer covers had to come off to do this service.

Also for a heads up the generator was performing fine when I took it in. After removing all the outer panels the tech found a 50 cent piece of chunks of magnetic metal from the inside. After inspecting the stator and rotor assembly the pieces were determined to have come off the stator. He said they had an issue with this on some 2001-2004 Onan 7500 generators that the glue they used had caused the magnets to release.

They had to replace the stator and rotor which were almost $1800 for the 2 parts. Total bill was $2800 after all was finished. $1000 for the 1000 hour service.

I have heard of people removing them themselves by putting the rear of the coach on ramps to get it up higher and use a floor jack under the generator to lower it down, not something I was prepared to do.

    Good luck!

WOW, I guess the sides will not come off with the Gen mounted in the coach?
