Popup Blocker/Flashplayer Pro is not a Popup ad

This is primarily directed to 1492 or Mr. Wizard. I did a search and after reading posts there decided to upgrade my IE Popup Blocker to HIGH, what if anything besides popup ads will I not see.

We frequently get those stupid ads that are written to have you download something you neither need nor want, as in bad things or very costly things.

After raising my level to HIGH, I tried the test 1492 posted and no popup, returned to MEDIUM and had the as. So now I'm on HIGH setting again but wonder if there are things I'm blocking that I want. I have no idea what might be in these ads I might want. I just don't to miss something important, it is just that my DW becomes so frustrated by them she makes me come get rid of them.

I hope my post is clear, if not just reply with what I need to tell you.

I have a Gateway computer with Windows 7 Home Premium and fully updated IE.

Thanks in advance,

David
  • Got rid of the darn thing. I started with AGV Free, no problems found. Tried MalwareBytes, no problems found. Downloaded Ad-Aware, scan turned up a lot of trackers, key strokes, ad ware and a couple of really bad guys.

All three were recommended by you guys but only Ad-Aware found anything.

Returned the IE popup blocker to medium and tried all the locations this virus showed up. While it was not a benovelant program at least they weren't trying to hack my card or bank account. This week my Dentist got hit at the Bank for $10K and my eldest daughter got hit for several thou.

So to all of you thanks for the help and suggestions and hopefully this won't happen again.

    Dave
  • I just realized that the only time this stupid thing appears is when we open either one of our mail servers. I'm still tracking down a cure.
  • Thanks Guys but changing to FF or anything else ain't going to happen. The DW uses both the computers we have and she will not go for it. Also if you read what I posted about the " " ad not being an ad but a vehicle for transmitting a virus, it seems to change things. I am going to look up the removal tools and see who is providing them, then I'll take some action.

I rand the test that 1492 suggested and the popup blocker blocked everything I threw at it. This is a nefarious scheme to infect a computer. Keep the good ideas coming and I'll let you know what I discover.

    Thanks

Guess there are still some people that use I.E.

Best solution is to use Firefox and "adblocker plus" and "ghostery". You can see who is trying to track you and also block all ads. JMHO

I use MS IE and have no pop ups (that I don't want). It also renders more faithfully to the HTML5 standard. My secondary browser is Google Chrome on the laptop. On the tablet (where I am as I "swipe" this reply) I use Dolphin Brower for Android. Both I get no pop ups. Depends on your browser settings and the sites visited. :)
  • I have looked up the popup I am receiving and it is not an ad, it is a virus. Several sites have removal tools for it but I haven't opened it and there is no other indication that I have the virus. I will check the program listing and run a check using AGV and then report back.

  • I don't think you will be missing anything
You will soon know of something "legitimate" is missing from websites you visit

This sounds more like a browser hijack, and should be dealt with by removing the offending adaware/malware. Try using Adwcleaner first, no install require, then followup with a Malwarebytes Free scan.

It would block some popups, but not those "modal" types using Javascript libraries such as JQuery. As an example, go to this website, and try clicking some of the examples to see if IE is able to block them? Websites can easily incorporate these to push ads.

You can disable most ad popups using an Adblocker, and virtually all using a script blocker, but will likely lose functionality on websites. Most websites need Javascript in one form or another.
  • I'm not a Wizard...but have had great luck eliminating ads and pop-ups by using FireFox and a couple of their extensions...like Ad Block Plus.

    With IE, not so much.
