Changed carburetor, but now have new problem - smoke?

I have an Onan Marquis Gold 7000. Float was bad so I put in a new carburetor. New carburetor installed fine, generator started right up with no problem, producing electricity 118volts @ 62Hz. Runs smooth. But some smoke around the right side of the unit. Almost like it is burning off some burnt spilled oil, but I can't see anything. After shutting down, still continues to smoke a while till cool. Anyone have an idea?
  • I'd assume it's just burn off. Run it for 15 minutes and the smoke should disappear. If it doesn't, gets worse, or starts to run bad, shut it down and disassemble to determine the cause. I worked for engines for many years. A little smoke residual hydrocarbons was the norm.

    Crankcase vent hose still connected?

yes it is connected, but that is on the left side. smoke seems to be from the right side.
  • Have you checked the oil? A bad float could have filled the crankcase with fuel.

you are correct. I just checked the oil (which had been recently changed) and the oil is thin, smells somewhat like gasoline.

I guess I will just drain and replace oil and filter; and try again.
  • Update: Changed the oil and filter. Generator smokes inside cabinet area... almost a burning rubber smell after only a minute or two. Continues to smoke a few minutes after shutting down the generator.
  • Update: smoke was being created from burning oil. Oil was seeping out of the yellow fill cap (was not tightened all the way). SOLVED.
