chaulking roof

I was told that I need to reseal around all the openings on my roof . do I have to remove the a/c and shower skylight tv antenna and vents or just remove the old silicon and reseal them:@
  • Dave,
What do find lacking with Eternabond sealing tapes? I was a sceptic about them, initially, but have used two types of Eternabond tapes and find them to be a very good product.

BTW, I'm with you on the removal, clean, and reseal. I don't see any upside to just sealing over a failed sealant. Most guys don't want to take the extra steps because it's more work.
  • For all the do it yourselves regarding roof sealants. I am 100% positive that other professional technicians will back me up on this. IT IS VERY VERY SIMPLE
and there are no magic gadgets or widgets or sprays that will sufficiently seal your camper.... so here goes.

If you have a rubber roof. Use dicor sealant to reseal around all penetrations and seams. This requires complete removal of old sealant, clean area to be sealed and reseal accordingly with new sealant. CHECK ALL SEALANT EVERY 60-90 DAYS. Reseal as needed.
If you have metal roof. DO NOT PAINT WITH COOL SEAL! Use a self leveling sealant such as Dicor, C-10 Flow Seal, Or a self leveling silicone such as Nu-Flex 311. Personally I like Dicor. Application is the same as I described above.
Cool Seal hardens and fails quickly and doesn't allow you to reseal adequately with proper sealant.
PVC roofs have their on special sealant. Use the required sealant per the material manufacturer.
    Vinyl and TPO roofs.... Dicor...
Notice I never mentioned Eternabond, painting or spraying or brushing. There is a reason. NONE of these methods replace the above maintenance requirements for every 60-90 days. THERE IS NO MAGIC FOREVER LASTING SEALANT.
Please don't misunderstand me. I love that there are those that want to do it themselves. Protecting your investment is Awesome and VERY commendable. It is what everyone should do. I just read all these forums about tech issues and all the answers make me laugh because I know that in the end my service center will be the main benefactor of it all.
In conclusion before a decision is made to perform work on your RV personally, read your forums, call your manufacture (they did build the unit), and question a tech. Above all know the product you are using. As a tech and successful business owner when I have questions I ALWAYS go straight to the source. Ask the horse.... not the rider.
Hope all this ranting helps. I truly want the best for my customers and other RV owners. Unfortunately they are led astray many times by popularity, quick fixes and the latest and greatest!
I guess I could have summed it all up with this "Ask the horse...not the rider".
    Sincerely

Yes, a couple of times a year a visual inspection is good and a touch up where needed. After about 10 years a complete reseal is not a bad idea.

You don't have silicon since it does not seal to a rubber roof (assuming you do have a rubber roof.) To answer your question you just need to top over what you have after a good cleaning of the old stuff. Take Dicor self leveling caulk, work in 1-2 foot sections and top the old stuff. I use the back of a plastic spoon to smooth it out and give the self leveling part a helping hand.

No need to use tape. To my eye it looks bad and I would wonder what the tape was hiding and the damage done if I was thinking about buying the rig.
  • We went with eternabond , but we removed all old caulk, put new caulk down and let cure for a few days - then cleaned/prepped areas and did the tape.

Hopefully you don't really have silicone up there.
  • Look into eternbond tape in 4" and you can go over the old caulk, and not have to worry about it for 15-20 years. For the AC it sits on it's own gasket that you snug up from the inside( don't over tighten) so you don't need to seal that. And don't use silicon. Eternabone will not stick over silicon so if you have it on the roof you will have to remove it.
