True but an EMS does more than surge protection and you do not move your S&B from place to place where the power sources can be radically different from one place to the next.
Of all of you fine folks who advocate these devices do you have one in your sticks and bricks? The same stuff can happen to your home. - BumpyroadExplorer

not a good analogy IMHO. my house has a constant/steady/uniform (more or less) supply of electricity. it was wired 30 some years ago and correct wiring has been assured since then. so for 90% of the reasons I use a multi-function surge protector the odds are miniscule that it will happen in my home.
I did consider getting one on one of my houses that the electric company wanted I believe $8.00 a month extra, but when I found out that that would not protect me from a jolt coming in thru the ground, decided that it was not worth it.
of course I have and use the standard assortment of un-interruptable power sources, surge protectors, etc. on computers, CPAP machines, etc.
bumpy - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerYes. And a lot more. Transient Voltage Suppressors, Gas tube discharging, small gap grounding ionization pathways. Disconnects. Ever see a Hughes Autoformer that resembles a large roast cooked at 300C? Lightning is unkind. If it strikes the high side of distribution, relay switches protect you. If it should hit X1, 2, or 3, god help you if you are connected.

- camper19709ExplorerProgressive EMS-T30.
- chiefneonExplorerHowdy!
We use Progressive EMS and it has saved use on more tha one occasion from storm lighing stricks. We had hard wired system in our old RV and the new 5er we use a portable one. As fulltime RVers we would not be without our Progressive EMS.

- BumpyroadExplorerget a multi function surge protector $250 and up. but as pianotuna sez, unplug during a lightning storm if you can.
bumpy - bob213ExplorerI agree with downtheroad's "brand" choice but I think you would be better off with their EMS unit. Hard wired or portable, they offer more protection. Check out the EMS-PT30C on the same link he provided.
- pianotunaNomad IIIIn a storm unplug. Nothing you can afford would protect you. Low voltage is far more of an issue. Look at an autoformer.
