Question on 5th wheel leveling legs

I there a length where a 6 point leveling system should be on a 5th wheel? Looking at a Jayco 38FLS. It only has 4 point leveling. The owner is also replacing the auto level with manual switches as he said the auto level has been a pain and that he already replaced the circuit board once.

Also, the rear levelers do not fully contract. I have looked at other Jayco's and have notice the same thing. They stick down about 6 inches from the underbelly. Should this be a concern? I am guessing the rear would drag before hitting the stabilizer bars

I have the 6 point auto level and can tell you the work great and most times the didn't work was operator error, there is a learning curve. If it's not leveling it's usually the systems lost zero point, LCI speak for level. It's simple to reset if you read the manual. I have had one failure in 4 years of 3/4 time camping, an auto resetting circuit breaker quit auto resetting, carried at local auto parts.
  • Our 35' FW only has two levelers in the front and two stabilizers in the rear. It's not automatic, but it's always worked for us.
  • 6 point versus 4 point is just how much you want to pay. You don't show a close up pic of the rear jacks. BUT, that height is NORMAL and they look fully retracted. Can you post a close up pic of one of the rear jacks? You take a straight line from bottom of the rear tires to the bottom of the rear skid bars. The jacks should be above that line. Now, on Most Jayco's you cannot raise the mounted position of the rear jacks to get more clearance. The top of the jack is already hitting the bottom of the c channel or floor. YES, operation of the jacks especially if you have either LCI or Atwood, have big problems. If the owner is installing manual switches, that is a good thing. You should have LCI jacks on that unit. • We have 6 jacks on our 18,000 gvw 'rig in sig' I'm sure the engineers and bean counters get together have a few beers and find out what is cheapest number to do the job.
  • Our 35’ fiver has only 4 levelers and it works fine. It is normal for the rear ones to hang a few inches below the bottom. Unless you had a third set of wheels, and the weight that carries, you don’t need 6. Ours is manual and auto. If the auto gets too many errors, we do it manually. Hope this helps!
