Or the 5.9 is my understanding. - joshuajimExplorer III believe that the 68RFE is all digital and will not work without the proper ECU and the proper ECU will not work with the V10.
- john_betExplorer IIJust had my 48re rebuilt by a local shop as first gear was beginning to slip after 154+k. They used heavy duty parts and a Suncoast converter for the same price as a factory reman. using stock parts. I have not towed with it yet, but headed out Saterday for a 4k trip. Nothing last forever.
- mileshuffExplorerI love the Dodge 68RFE transmission. I have a 2007 6.7L with the 68RFE. 75,000 miles mostly towing mountain grades and never a problem. Far better than the older 48 series trannies. Although a good rebuild by a shop that does more than toss in stock components will make a 48RE bullet proof.
- pronstarExplorerIf you rebuild a weak transmission using OEM Mopar parts, you aren't addressing the shortcomings. A 47RE/48RE that's built right will last the life of the truck, even behind an engine making big power.
There have been a few Dodge's with Allisons put in them, on various Ram forums.
There have been far more Duramaxes with built 47RE/48RE's in them, big-power guys on the Duramax forums. Google it... - aemedicExplorerThe 48RE in my 06 Dodge Dually went out twice in 75k miles pulling my Toy Hauler. I sold it and went with an MDT with an 8.3L Cummins and a truly Heavy Duty Allison 6 Spd...
- JIMNLINExplorer IIIYour '99 Dodge tranny is 14 year old ancient tech. Dodge has uprated there trannies greatly since the '90s era.
I would look into the 48RE or a 68RE which is Dodge's latest. Check with a area Dodge truck salvage for crossover transmission cost for a low millage unit or a rebuilder. - carringbExplorer

If you can spring for one of the newer 6.7 CTD it has a great 6 speed auto behind it that works every bit as well as the Ally.
The Aisin in my '08 ram 4500 (work truck) self destructed at 60,000 miles. Root cause was a sticking turbo causing over boost however. - carringbExplorer
