dometic awning question on rewinding

not an awning expert so need some help. I have an 8500 series awning and it had a damaged spring. On replacing the spring and rewinding (8 revolutions is required), do I rewind just one end or both ends because I see both awning arms are printed with a direction for rewinding them. Thanks
  • Some good information about the awaning spring: for those that haven't changed out your pull strap, need to inspect it every now and then. Mine broke as I was coming down with it a few years ago. I thought, what if I was going up? Just something to check...

Yes wind both ends and I would turn it another couple of turns because you will find 8 turns is very weak.
As your turning the side that doesn't lock, don't get your head and face over the tool!

If one side has not be unwound then no need to rewind.

Number of turns is dependent on size of awning.

Pretty hard to change the fabric without unrolling the awning. Probably doable but would be much harder that way.
If you have actually done this job you will find the "Number of turns" stated is not enough and even the manufacturer doesn't follow their own guidelines.

OP only changed spring. Nothing mentioned about fabric.

    Mine called for 12 turns.....and dang if I didn't unwind 12 turns.
Went back with 12 turns and awning rolled up slick as can be

I just replaced all my awning fabrics. Whoever had them off before me never rewound them properly and had very little tension. Now they are correct and pull down and retract so much better. Yes, both sides need to be wound the same.

Exactly and this is what happens if you follow the instructions to the letter. The manufacturer puts more turns into them than what the manual states. I have no idea why they do this in their manuals but they do.
I put a couple more turns into mine but it still isn't as tight as it was from the factory.
If you count them as it unrolls, you'll find the number is somewhat arbitrary and there are even a different number of turns from side to side.
