We loved it. Pulled a 39 foot 5th wheel. Took 299 over to 36 and 36 to 101.
We overnighted at Elk Country RV Resort & Campground near Trindad. Elk are known to come into the rv park. They didn't the night we stayed but we did see over 50 in the park a few years previous as we were passing by.
Hwy. 36 is designed for pack carrying donkies and motorcycles:):):)
Nothing wrong with 36 that a competent driver can't handle. Pulled a TT across it many times. - MarkTwainExplorer

Probably 50 threads on this hiway. Some don't mind it. Many of us hate it. At least three passes to cross. 20 around clear lake is better or the road our of grants pass are much preferred.
Hwy. 20 ia my choice to get to the coast. I have driven 299 with a 32TT. It is not a road that you can just relax and enjoy the scenery. Be sure and check what construction projects are going on before you start on 299. I prefer a more relaxing and easier RV road to get to 101. You might add an extra hour but worth it to me. - LynnmorExplorerDid the exact same trip last year with a 26" trailer and an F250. No real problem, great views. The real curvy part towards the east had a lot of construction going on, but no real delays. They have some major projects, so you might want to google CA 299 for information.

- korbeExplorerWe enjoy that route. A lot less logging and chip truck traffic now that the forests are basically closed.
- romoreExplorer III drove that road in a heavy under powered truck, over 6 hours from Redding to Eureka. It was a long day but drop dead beautiful country. It is certainly doable with your rig but don't try to push and make time.
- gme3470ExplorerWe live in Redding and over the years we have pulled various trailers and 5th wheels over 299 to the coast. It used to have a lot of sharp curves but in recent years they have, for the most part, been straightened out. It is a designated "scenic" highway and well worth the trip. BTW, 299 does not go "over to 36" and highway 36 is a road to be avoided when towing an RV.
