The whole thing about taxing food and medicine in Mexico is completely misunderstood.
It's fuel for fires that people like to start.
Hot potato, yes. Better to close this topic. I wouldn't say though that in Mexico "same medicine is free". IMSS isn't really "free" and it won't cover pre-existing conditions, and Seguro Popular, while being free for low-income people, has a lot of gaps in their list of approved procedures and medicines. - briansueExplorerYep folks - I am well aware that it a waste of breath to try to inform the misinformed and provide facts and common sense - but I still have breath to waste - at least a little bit.
If Mexico is so great, why the heck are you in the US? Suggest you leave the evil USofA and take up residence in any one of those countries that are better than the one you feel you must spend your time in.
I am a very long time citizen of the US and a solid patriot but as a patriot I see the ills that have tried to infect this country over the past 30 years or so and I work hard to try to fix them. We used to be a great country - the greatest in the world. Now our education system ranks around 25th in the world (obvious by how ignorant so many in the US seem to be of late). Our highway system is crumbling and bridges are falling down. Our infrastructure is about the collapse. Our health care system is the laughing stock of the world as health care costs soar out of site. I am here as a loyal patriot to continue my efforts to try to correct these ills and will do so until the day I die. Unlike so many here who claim to believe how great things are and yet refuse to accept the need to pay taxes to make things better. Yep - wasting breath probably.US is visited by around 75 million foreign tourists
And would probably see a great many more if we weren't so unfriendly to those who visit and have rules that make it so difficult for anyone to visit - it is even extremely difficult for those of us to return here after we leave on vacation for a bit.Maybe if Mexico offered some legitimate opportunities for employment
And a little info for those who still do not pay attention - Mexico's economy is actually booming as the rich US companies move their production there more and more for cheap labor - which is getting to be more expensive each day as they realize that big business in the US will send as many jobs out of the US as they can so the greedy rich running the companies and this country can line their pockets with even more money - moving more and more jobs out of the US to all other parts of the world. In Mexico agriculture is booming as more and more land becomes productive providing more and more jobs to those who want to work - and corporate farms move out of the US because they cannot find workers - and we see the trucks lined up for miles on the Mexico side of the border at each crossing waiting to bring us so much of our food and other consumables. So many in the US are just so unaware of what is really going on here it is just so sad.
But we will try to keep up the good fight to overcome those with their heads in the sand as we try to return the US to its former glory. Perhaps if some of the less informed would get out more and learn about what is going on we would have more of a chance. - qtla9111Nomad

BTW, just did a bit of research and besides Waffles, Belgium has the highest tax rate on personal income in the world, so it probably is a great place for someone to leech of the backs of others. As for welcoming visitors, only France hosts more foreign tourists than the US. By the numbers, the US is visited by around 75 million foreign tourists, Mexico about 22 Million. Maybe if Mexico offered some legitimate opportunities for employment, drug production and smuggling wouldn't flourish.Mexico offers much better conditions and opportunities than the US, that is why they have such a problem with illegal immigration and have to spend so much money on border control. They have all sorts of border patrol agents, security fences, aviation resources and electronic border monitoring to keep all those illegal US immigrants out. As for Belgium, I guess they do have great waffles.
Mexico actually doesn't worry a whole lot about people visiting their country. Nor do most other countries in the world. Many encourage immigration just as the US used to - how our ancestors got here. Very few other countries discourage immigration or tourism as the US does. Remember when President Reagan said "tear down that wall"? Then the US builds a wall? "Nothing to fear but fear itself"?
Criminals bring drugs to the US where the world market for drugs buys the drugs. US citizens also go to other countries where they buy drugs and bring them back to the US where they sell them for huge profits. Wealthy US bankers buy the expensive drugs to help their brains think up new ways to take our money.
US companies and businesses hire illegal immigrants knowing full well that they are illegal. They hire them so these businesses have a source of cheap labor. These businesses encourage these people to come and often recruit in other countries and help to bring those workers to the US so they can pay them less and put more money in their own pockets.
The workers would not come if business would stop hiring them and the smugglers would not come if the users would stop buying their products. Do you treat the symptoms or the cause? And which is the symptom and which is the cause? Hard to tell?
Apparently Belgium not only offers great waffles but they have great doctors and great health care that people can actually afford.
Your last line is a joke. Should have read, "when there is such a high demand for an illegal product, criminals will flourish".
But that's okay, based on what you've written, you'll never understand.
Brian, don't waste any more breath on this one. - stanbnvExplorerAppearently we have one of those superpatriots who want to tell people that if they don't like it here go somewhere else. Well buddy, I spent 30 years in the US Coast Guard and I am as patriotic as anybody, and what briansue posted is nothing but the truth. Please tell me what RV park you own so I can avoid it like the plague. We will spend the winter down in Mexico and will enjoy it.

I found a chart online . . . http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/sales.pdf . . . that shows which states tax food and drugs and how much the tax is in each state - with exemptions - if interested. When they first came out with tax on food in groceries and restaurant it was nick-named the hot dog tax.
Couple stories.....
We have and friend who had an accident and a serious problem with one arm that docs in US said would cost over $100,000. Flew to Belgium to one of the world's leading docs for this specific problem and got it fixed - total cost with airfare and hotel etc. was just under $4,000.
A couple years ago a friend staying at Roca Azul (no names but some may know) west of Lake Chapala had a heart problem requiring immediate attention. Doc in MX said if he tried to return to states he would die. So they did it in Guadalajara and it cost around $10,000. Doc said pay me when you can. Returning to US they told their insurance and filed. Insurance said in US that would cost $120,000 and cut them a check for the $10,000.

I do think the poor, especially the working poor, will suffer. Don't get me started on a political post on the US medical system. You and I would concur on that one.
