Cleaning the awning

Just so everyone knows, I ABSOLUTELY hate doing this chore. However, it does make the beast look even better!
  • I buy the large size Tilex Mold and Mildew at Wally world. Pour it into a 1 gal garden sprayer and add water to the 1 gal mark. Extend awning and spray down bottom side real well, roll up, wait 15-20 minutes, unroll and hose off. Any problem areas respray and roll up again, another 15 min and unroll and hose off. Never had to do more than twice. When done, pristine white awning on bottom, top is whatever color it is supposed to be. No hard work at all.

    Then come do my awning.

    Mine too!

It works great but without an eight foot stepladder it's hard to get at the top of the awning. It was suggested that we use a power washer with a cleaning solution. We intend to try it.
  • How do your results work on the top side if next to trees. Getting ready to clean mine but I have been parked with nice oak tree next to me since spring. Figuring I may have to use a brush on it. Have had heavy rains and nothing has removed the stuff on the top side.

    How to clean awning:
Lowes: One gallon pump sprayer of Tilex mold and mildew cleaner

    Extend awning completely.

Spray 2-3 beginning at the roller edge on top and underside of awning, roll up to where you have sprayed

Continue to spray next 3 feet or so, roll up that much more

Finish spraying roll up awning completely

    Wait 20 to 30 min.

    Unroll, brush lightly on underside

    Rinse thoroughly.

    Results: Clean, bright awning

This is exactly what I do.
I have also used clorox bleach mixed with laundry detergent.
    The tilex works the best.

I add these to the ends when stored to help keep the rain out.
    clicky

  • I use Tilex Mold & Mildew remover. Pour 2 qts into a bucket, use a extra brush put onto end of extend-a-pole. Rinse both sides of awning to get wet. Put on old clothes that I don't care about if the Tilex gets on them (it's a bleach), safety glasses/goggles, do the underside 1st, then topside. Roll up awning, wait 20-30 minutes, unroll, rinse. Done. Looks like new. Let air dry and roll back up.

Be sure to rinse or wash side of camper when done
  • My neighbor across the street melted his awning trying to clean it with Armor-All.

Tried to claim it was defective, but the dealer was not as stupid as he seems to assume. Then he tried to scam the insurance company. He finally bought new fabric and made his wife and kid install it (afraid of ladders).
  • I have to say, DutchmanSport showed us how easy it was to clean the awning using the Magic Eraser....super easy, not a lot of effort, and it's still spotless after months. Doesn't use any chemicals and it took 20 minutes to do the entire thing. It works, and no damage to your awning. Thanks DutchmanSport...I've passed this tip on to all my camping friends.
  • CLR just came out with a mold & mildew remover that works great and has no bleach in it. Spray on, let sit for a few minutes, and rinse off. Let awning dry thoroughly before rolling up again.
  • Pressure washer. Mine has a chemical tank I add bleach to. Takes longer to get the pressure washer out than it does to clean the awning
