A dually is not as much of a PITA as a daily driver as I had anticipated. Having the dually give me many more options for campers or trailers.
Ditto. I do not have a crew cab but an extended cab long bed. It is only 9 inches longer the a crew cab with a 6.5 foot bed. I am so happy I have it. I just scaled my fiver yesterday after a 3 night trip with empty tanks and it had a pin of exactly 3400 lbs. The manufacturer advertised 2970. So by the time you add the weight of a hitch, yourself and others, the payload diminishes quickly.
If you know you can keep your loaded pin at 3k or under, a srw will be fine. Otherwise, I'd opt for the drw. Stability is great, too! Good luck. Phillip - billyray50ExplorerWould having 19.5 wheels and tires on a SRW truck help with with a fifth as it does with a truck camper? I know the real limiting factor is wheel and tire ratings. Looking to upgrade to a fifth and thought with my new 19.5 visions and 19.5 16 ply tires would give me more options.

I don't see where the OP posted his weights..but realistically a SRW maxes out around 3000-3500 lbs of payload..generally that's for a gasser. 17,200 is too much for a gasser too.
Thanks!

My 2014 3500 SRW has a max payload of 4,022 and towing capacity of 17,150. It is a extra cab SB Cummins. My truck is my daily driver and tows our 15,500 GVWR 5th wheel with payload to spare.
Recognize that even if you don't max out your gvwr you likely would overload your rear tires with a heay pin weight plus hitch weight. (3500 + 200 all on the rear tires) - ol_Bombero-JCExplorer

IMO: Best advice:
I would advise whatever works best for *YOU* - as well as the load it's intended for..:C

Op has another post telling of his purchase.
Big Country 3450TS
15,500# GCVWR pin weight will be 3,100 to 3,800#
It is 38'-4" in length.
I personably would not tow it with a SRW. Dually would be my choice. - garysolExplorer

You can safely tow most any 5er out there. Medium duty engine and transmission to boot.
Oh please let us know what color you choose.
Case Closed ;) - SandSOrrellExplorerMore than a year ago, I took most of the advice on here and got a 3500 diesel dually. I have never pulled a 5er with anything else, but I have never regretted following that dually advice. I pull a Cedar Creek 34RLSA with the 7000 # axles and G rated tires. Pin weight of that thing loaded really surprised me: 3750# (weighed). Also, living in Texas and driving through Oklahoma, the cross-winds can be tough. That dually keeps me tracking straight down the road. So, thanks to everyone for the dually advice and I'll pass that same advice along to you. Happy RVing!

Thread title got me on that one. The OP was asking about 1 ton trucks.
17200 lb 5ver is too much for a 1 ton srw as well... unless you disregard all ratings ....including max tire carrying capacity. I don't give gvwr a whole lot of regard and adding air bags can increase an axle's ability to carry weight but to disregard tire ratings is going too far in my mind.
I agree. Tire ratings are where it's at IMHO.
