1989 Winnebago Super Chief

After a 5 year camping hiatus my wife and I are looking at a 1989 Winnebago Super Chief. The unit has 17K miles and is in good condition. The owner is moving and needs to sell. The price seems reasonable. Roof and tires are great with no signs of any leaks.

Any Super Chief owners out there or any comments from the experts would be appreciated.
  • Tires MAY LOOK GREAT but if over 5-6 years old they need to be replaced. It is not the looks it is the deterioration you cannot see. There is a DOT date code on the tires find it and then let us know the age of the tires.

    Procedure found at http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11
  • The Winnies seem to hold up better than some of the other gassers of that age but ultimately condition and maintenance are everything and a tight roof is priceless.
Which chassis is it on - Ford (John Deere) or Chevy? Keep in mind that while the coach may be a 1989 the chassis could easily be a 1988. This is somewhat typical but can be important when purchasing parts.
Buying any coach of that age, expect it to dig into your pocket right of the bat. Tires, brakes, cooling system and electrical seem need attention especially if it has sat a lot and with only 17K on a 25 year old coach it has sat a LOT. Could be a good deal, just keep your eyes open.
    Best of Luck!
  • I'm a Winnie owner and that Super Chief sounds good to me. IMHO, after you get all the bugs out (if any) you will have a nice coach for a long time! My neighbor had one and enjoyed his. I would put money into that coach when I had too as I go along! If needed fix the basics first, tires and brakes and steering you need those before anything else! Happy Trails with your new S.C.
  • Thanks for all the advise...
I talked to the owner today...
This unit was originally a police unit utilized in surveillance...
The owner purchased the unit 6 months ago from a police auction and is selling it due to a breakup of his girlfriend...
Everything on it works but needs Freon in the engine air unit...
It is a GM unit with a 454 and 17K miles...
From the pictures the inside looks new...
The outside has the normal fading from age...
He told me that he drove the unit approximately 150 miles to his home and checked everything out and found no leaks or weeps...
I believe that that the police dept probably took really good care of the mechanical of the unit...
The wife and I are is the final decision stage...
He priced it to us well under wholesale...
BTW he states that the roof is metal...
I that they were all fiberglass...
The unit looks great from the pictures...

  • Pretty nice.So it looks like it is on a Chevy P30 chassis. As a previous poster stated it is probably on a 1988 chassis. This was common most RV's in that age range are normally on a year earlier chassis.
That said tires, tires, tires. Probably 8R/19.5's which can be had on EBAY for about $180.00 each delivered to your door.
If you decide to get tires make sure to tell them you want tires made recently no more than 3 - 4 months ago.Nothing like getting year old tires that you do not know how they were stored.
