1999 Fleetwood Discovery DP Alternator

May have an alternator problem, were is it located is near the engine? If it is bad and has to be replaced, how much do they run. Has anyone changed the alternator themselves or it has to go to a shop. Can they be changed by a auto mechanic

Sure. You can check with your brand of alternator for an approved rebuilder near you.

And this should NOT put you on the side of the road. You can always start your generator, which powers your converter or inverter/charger to charge the house battery. Either hard wire or use boost switch to allow house battery to keep up the chassis battery.

  • I should add, the highway patrol came to our aid at 2:am as we attempting to get home. When I separated the motor home from the car I disconnected the Blue Ox breaking system and put in the trunk of the car. The patrolman asked what was that? I explained that it is stop the car in case of emergency. This was in California, but they were very nice and helpful
  • Agree. get your voltmeter out and do some tests first.
  • A bad battery isolator will give the same symptoms as could a loose/bad wire connection, OR yes it could be the alternator.

All I am suggesting is that you troubleshoot the issue rather than just throwing parts at it.

Replaced engine batteries 3 weeks ago, and while towing my car both car and MH batteries went dead. Had to jump start and detached both car and MH and drove home. Yesterday had to run generator anti get engine to kick over. After running engine for about 10 minutes it seemed ok, but I still had generator running so it was not accurate. While running motor without generator I turned headlights on and voltage did not seem to change. That's why I think may be alternator.
    Tank you

  • Your chassis maker (?Freightliner?) can give you the correct part number.

Pretty easy with side radiator (done from the rear). Much more difficult with rear radiator (done from bedroom or closet-- from above).

Actual placement depends somewhat on engine, but most are on drivers side of engine near the top.

Any tech can replace if you have the right part-- it ain't rocket science.

BUT, you may be jumping the gun-- why do you think the alternator is bad:

Have you checked voltage with engine running at alternator B+ terminal? At battery isolator alternator terminal in? At battery isolator lugs out to battery banks? Tell us what is happening!
