LP Fill Fail

It looks to me like the person filling the propane tank was clueless. In all probability the bleeder valve was already open and when she began filling gas began coming out...just as it should until liquid begins coming out at 80% full. Suggest you take your MH to a filler who knows what he/she is doing.

My guess is that if the propane tank was completely empty, they unscrewed the vent valve to far, and perhaps it came off?

I have had this happen in places where they do not fill a lot of propane tanks, when I bring in a portable tank that is completely empty. They unscrew the vent until some propane comes out, but on a empty tank, they do not stop at one turn.!

So after they open the liquid valve and start adding propane, then it shoots out a tremendous amount of propane gas (because the vent was wide open and should not have been open more than a tiny amount). The auto shut off valve will stop filling the tank before liquid starts coming out of the vent valve anyway.

The vent valve only needs to be open about 1/4 turn in many cases, and just a trickle of propane should be coming out. . .

To the right of the fill port in picture is the 'bleeder valve' .

It should be Cracked OPEN when filling.....vapor comes out and then when it starts spitting liquid you STOP filling and close bleeder valve. Bleeder valve is set at 80% liquid level.

Sound like bleeder is still open or has failed.

Tank needs to be empty to replace.

The tank could have already been full and when she hit the nozzle it just spewed out:h

Cylinders filled by fixed liquid level gauge, such as forklift cylinders are not required to be filled by weight. They are subject to visual inspections and recertification requirements like all cylinders but are not filled using a scale. I support this idea wholly! Gas is not something to "mess" with if you do not totally understand the principles involved. For your safety, have it done right the first time and have it explained to you as it is being serviced so you will know what went wrong. They don't ususally charge very much for their service compared to the "charge" you might encounter is it is not done properly. Good luck.

I'd recommend going to a regular LP company and have it checked out.
