Oil Hubs ( front)

Does any one know what the maximum oil level for the front hubs?? It has a mark for minimum, but no line for maximum. There is a oil stain on the outside of the hub, not fresh, looks like it's been there for quit a while.
This is on a 2006 Winnebago Adventurer gasser 05 chassis Looking thru the plastic on the outside of the hub the oil level is just a little below the center. maybe an 1/8" lower then the other wheel.
The book doesn't say or have a picture.

I think some of you might have misunderstood. In the center of the clear plastic window there is a small rubber plug. About the size of a dime or a little smaller. then to the side of that there is a black
plastic plug about the size of a quarter. looks like it should screw out.
The book is just not real clear as to which is the fill hole. That center rubber plug doesn't look like it will come out just real easy.
My problem is I am afraid of tearing the rubber plug and having it fall inside.

The Workhorse plastic hub covers have only one oil line and it is the MINIMUM. The bottom of the hole in the center is the MAXIMUM level. The side cover hole is the drain. This is covered on page 179 of the Workhorse chassis manual.

Your book is different than mine. My pages are not numbered from 1 thru a 100 or so. They are 1-100 and so forth, then it goes to 2-about 50 then 3- to about 50 more. I have about 3 paragraphs on the oil hub. Thanks any way.

  • I used to fill mine to the bottom of the hole.
    Side plug is the drain.

You can go to irv2.com and Ho to the Workhorse forum.

I believe that filling it up to the bottom of the hole would be to much and that that the oil would force its way out when heated and expanded. There should be two lines. One marked full and one marked add. You don't want to over fill hubs cause to much heated oil can blow out seals and plugs, at least they do on tractor trailer hubs. Here is the best pic I could find:
  • I agree with rgatijnet1, just fill it full. I think on some hub covers (they're made by a lot of different mfgs) that you have the minimum line that you saw and then there's another line that usually isn't marked between that and the fill hole. I believe that's the full mark, but again, I fill mine up to the fill hole.

As long as you don't see any active leaks, 1/8" of difference between the two sides is nothing to worry about - that's probably because the MH isn't exactly level.

As part of your maintenance, the caps should be removed every couple of years and the oil drained. Look at what was drained and inside of the hub for excessive metal or any small hunks.

I carry an extra quart of hub oil with me because I've had one leak and other crack over the years and of course there weren't any new covers within miles.

Yes, the center cap the size of quarter, usually red, but often black, is make of rubber and pulls out.

\ are you saying, pull that rubber plug out to fill??? There is a cap or the side of the hub about the size of a quarter that looks like a fill plug.
    Thanks
