Parking restriction in unincorporated area of LA county

I called Los Angeles country planner today just to ask them if there are any RV parking restrictions in my area (an unincorporated area of Los Angeles county). I was surprised to learn that we are not allowed to park RVs on our own driveway.

But parking on the street is ok because there is no restriction. Can anyone who live in Los Angeles county area please provide your thoughts or experiences ?

thanks

Parking your rig on the street or on the driveway in East LA vs. Castaic or Altadena will all get very different responses so it really depends on the neighborhood (neighbors).

Definitely depends on the area, and the neighborhood. I live in Castaic which is North unincorporated LA county. Many of the neighborhoods here are newer homes where RV parking is not possible due to very small yards and short driveways, street parking also would be frowned upon. But MY neighborhood is older built in 1981, most homes have enough room for an RV, there is no association. So guess where all the toy owners have bought homes?? YEP! 75%+ have a RV, boat, work trailer etc. NOT an exaduration. Everyone here keeps up their homes and vehicles, everyone is happy to be able to keep it at home. NO ONE is going to complain. This is one thing I looked for when buying, how many RVs were in the neighborhood. We have been here since 2006
  • Lakewood bans RV street parking except for 'short periods'. Cypress bans overnight street parking of RVs. Both seem to allow driveway parking. Long Beach seems to allow street and driveway parking. State of CA allows RV street parking for 3-days at time, then move it. Too many variations.
  • Bunch of jerks where I live in Oakland. Also, got a couple of BS tickets, I sent proof for a review also and got stuck paying for the tickets, since that time (2009), I have no longer donated anything to the City for any cause, and have no plans to ever do so. I probably used to donate at least $500 a year. Their loss for ticking me off.

  • I think the OP is referring to LA county unincorporated area. Not in a city such as Pasadena-which have their own regulations.

Unincorporated land is diverse in LA county-stretching all the way to sparsely populated deserts. Probably the level of enforcement of these regulations is highly variable due to location, population density, and whether a neighbor decides to complain.

If it was me and trying to decide where to park my motorhome, I'd scout the neighborhood. Are there other RV units parked on the driveways? How would RV fit in parked there? Your immediate neighbors? Are you in such a rural area that few would see it or care? I'd always have fallback that it may be necessary to move to paid storage.
  • Pasadena has long had a law restricting overnight parking on the street. Perhaps the other cars had permits from the city? Residents can get permits, depending upon their off street parking limitations.
  • Parked on the street, in a long line of other cars, none of which had a ticket. I suspect they targeted my car because it was from out of town.
  • Gonzo42 , Sorry to hear that . Did you park on your driveway or on the street ?
  • Had a nasty experience in Pasadena CA. Got a parking ticket that I thought I didn't deserve. So I went to the city's website for their procedure. It stated I had to request an administrative review, which I did, and included all evidence photos. No reply.

Months later I get a letter saying I still owed the fine plus penalties. Again I replied with a letter, a copy of my previous letter, and the photos. Months more went by. No reply.

Eventually the City of Pasadena colluded with the CA DMV, charged me hundreds of dollars total, and I had to pay or not be able to register my car. Never got the administrative review or even an acknowledgement of my letters.

Conclusion: Their procedure is a sham.
