- ed-myrnaExplorerI shut mine off because most home owner insurance policies extend the time the house can be vacant and still give you coverage if the water is off.
- 6_7_tow_rigExplorerTurn it off or you will come home to a swimming pool in the basement. Imagine if you left on a Friday, and a pipe breaks up stairs. You come home Sunday after the water has run non stop for 48 hours. Yep, it happened and was an absolute disaster. Same goes for your camper, if you leave turn it off.
- westendExplorerTurn your water off.
The Sister-in-law left their's on in Phoenix, the irrigation guy came by, did something, and a pipe broke inside the house. The leak was discovered and the water shut off but by the time they got down there, the place was full of mold. They ended up pulling all of the dry wall and wood trim,. replacing it and sold the house. - samsontdogExplorerI turn the main water valve off in my summer home during the winter and our Az winter home off during the summer. It gets plenty warm during the summer in Az and I have never had problems in 15 years with pee traps in my homes nor all my rental properties that have Park Models on them. I say turn your water valve off
- tvman44ExplorerI always turn ours off if we will be gone more than a couple of days. Once we were gone for 2 weeks and a pipe broke in the yard and flooded my yard and the neighbors with a resulting water bill of over $100.00. When one of the neighbors realized where all the water was coming from he contacted our son to come shut it off. So now it is easier and cheaper to turn the water off, thankfully the broken pipe was in the yard and not in the house. :)
- coolmom42Explorer IIIf no one is using the water in your house, the traps will dry up even if you leave the main water valve on.
I don't cut mine off because my daughter & grandkids make stops there every few days to check on things & often use the facilities, water plants, etc.
But if no one is in the house at all, definitely cut off the main valve and pour some vegetable oil in the traps to keep them from drying out. That's the cheapest thing to use. - mleekampExplorerWe shut our well pump off on every trip. If there is a leak, like from washing machine hose, etc, then our pump runs non stop....EXPENSIVE to fix the pump after it burns up...just as any water leak would be.
We have it on our pre-trip checklist to do. - JamesBrExplorerIt really depends on how long I will be gone for. A long weekend, I don't. A 2 week vacation to FL, I turn the main off.
- gboppExplorerYou can pour some mineral oil into the traps to help slow the evaporation process.
- wanderingbobExplorer III do not believe bugs can come up your DRAIN pipes that easy . You did not say how long you would be gone . What will happen in warm climates if your "P" traps are not full is that you will get sewer gas coming out of drains , it will take several months for this to happen .
