Do you folks carry a generator and extra gas in cans? Where do you store the full gas can(s)during travel?I was originally planning to place them inside a Stanley Tool Box located in the bed of my truck, where I will have the generator as well.Today, I opened up the tool box and the heat was terrible. The temp was in the 90's and the tool box is a heavy duty BLACK plastic. I instantly, thought uh oh, not a good place to keep a full can of gas. Yes, the box is well vented BUT??What other safe options are there? (NO, solar is not in my near future)

My spare gas can sits in the open bed of pickup, secured with bungie cord. Heat will expand fuel and may force out can vent, better in the open than inside compartment.

When I carry a gas can I just have a 2.5 gallon plastic gas container strapped just behind the tool box.

Not for a Genny but anytime I transport fuel I use those portable red fuel containers bungied to the side of the truck bed. After a while the tanks turn pink, but I have never seen one burst due to heat YMMV. thanks

My generator box is vented. Never start gen without opening box. Otherwise, the cans are locked by cable and pad locks in truck bed on plastic trays. Already had one attempt at stealing the fuel. The locking cables foiled the fools! My generator box have exhaust fans made for marine applications, no spark. I still open box and air it out before remote starting gen. Also remove fuel cans during operation !

Gasoline is not flammable but the vapor sure is and that is what you don't want building up in a closed space. Lots of vents from marine supply houses that will allow vapors out without letting water inside.

I use steel jerry cans of the NATO variety. You can buy holders for them too so you can mount them. Mine aren't CARB legal but I'm not in Ca. You can get CARB legal ones if you want. Most plastic ones suck until you step up to pro grade refueling stuff.

I put 5 jerry cans in the truck bed with a cable lock through the handles.

I like the way the Australia trailers take on the gas can problems. Most of their off-road trailers all have built-in storage areas for the gas cans...

My gas can usually ends up in the bed of my truck near the tail gate or in my OFF-ROAD POPUP front deck.

I also carry a OKLAHOMA CREDIT CARD with me where I can Syphon Gas Out of my truck if I get into a generator running out gas emergency. I havent done this with my newer truck - it probably cant be done with the newer trucks haha...

I carry one very similar to this one with the EPA spout that seals with o-rings. I carry it in the bed of the truck.

2 Gal Gas Can I wedge it in between bins or the genny so it can't move. Never a problem.

I do the same thing with a 5th wheel the R/V provides shade. But it the temps are on the high 90s shade will not make a difference

Great information, Thank You. I suddenly became worried about the heat hitting the gas cans siting in the back of the truck. Seems like another issue resolved for us.
Back of the truck they will go, next to the nice tool box I was going to use.

I built a 24 gallon aluminum tank that bolts to the back of my tool box and aux. diesel tank. I have a removable gas line that is 20' long to connect it to the trailer. I also carry a 6 gallon boat tank to run the generator when I have to go fill the big tank.
